High school is hard. Dating is harder. But finding yourself? That’s the hardest. That’s the lesson taught by Netflix’s newest original film, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser.

The high school comedy, snapped up earlier this year, sees a wrong-number text sparks a virtual romance between a smart but unpopular teen and a sweet jock who thinks he’s talking to a gorgeous cheerleader. Based on Cyrano de Bergerac, the film stars Stranger Things’ Shannon Purser as Sierram alongside RJ Cyler (I’m Dying Up Here), Noah Centineo (The Fosters), Chrissy Metz (This Is Us), Alan Ruck and Lea Thompson. Produced and financed by Black Label Media, it’s written by Linsey Beer and directed by Ian Samuels.

Sierra Burgess Is a Loser: Netflix nabs Shannon Purser’s new high school comedy

Netflix has nabbed the rights to Shannon Purser’s new high school comedy. Purser, who needs no introduction to Stranger Things fans, is known worldwide as Barb, the briefly-seen high school student in the sci-fi series who became a surprise cult phenomenon and poster child of the 1980s.

Now, she’s heading back to school for something far less strange: a teen comedy based on Cyrano de Bergerac, titled Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. Produced and financed by Black Label Media, it’s written by Linsey Beer and directed by Ian Samuels.

Purser stars as Sierra, a smart teen who, after a case of mistaken identity, finds herself teaming up with the popular girl at school (Kristein Froseth, Rebel in the Rye) to win her crush.

The movie co-stars RJ Cyler (I’m Dying Up Here), Noah Centineo (The Fosters), Chrissy Metz (This Is Us), Alan Ruck and Lea Thompson. It’s produced by Molly Smith, Rachel Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill.

In a deal brokered by WME, Netflix has acquired the rights to the film, with Sierra Burgess Is a Loser set to premiere on the streaming service later this year. In the meantime, you can read our interview with Shannon Purser here.
