Netflix cancels The Good Cop

Netflix has decided not to renew The Good Cop, its police sitcom starring Tony Danza and Josh Groban.
The father-son cop series (created by Monk’s Andy Breckman) follows Tony Sr. (Danza), a lovable yet not exactly honourable former NYPD officer who never followed the rules, and his son, Tony Jr. (Groban), a brilliant, straight-laced NYPD detective who makes a point of always following the rules while solving Brooklyn’s toughest cases. The odd couple become unofficial partners as Tony Sr. offers his overly-cautious son blunt, street-wise advice – not to mention, between cases, the small problem of having to live with each other.
The show “feels straight out of network TV show from 20 years ago”, we wrote in our review of Season 1. “The result is a nostalgic vehicle that sits alongside The Ranch and One Day a Time in Netflix’s apparent attempt to corner the market that it initially tried to distinguish itself from. But Breckman’s work is so precisely calibrated in its balance of being entertaining and undemanding that The Good Cop does just enough to arrest your attention while it’s on.”
In a crowded marketplace, though, Netflix – like all other streamers and broadcasters – is looking for shows (whether broad or niche) that will stand out and generate some buzz and a community of fans.
“The Good Cop will not return for a second season,” Netflix said in a statement to Deadline. “We’re grateful to creator Andy Breckman and his fellow producers, writers, the incredible crew and especially stars Tony Danza and Josh Groban for bringing this classic odd couple father-son story to Netflix.”

The unusual pairing play Tony Sr. (Danza), a lovable yet not exactly honourable, former NYPD officer who never followed the rules, and his son, Tony Jr. (Groban), a brilliant, straight-laced NYPD detective who makes a point of always following the rules while solving Brooklyn’s toughest cases. The Wire’s Isiah Whitlock Jr. joins Netflix’s The Good Cop
15th November 2017
The Wire’s Isiah Whitlock Jr. has joined the cast of Netflix’s new series, The Good Cop.
Created by Monk’s Andy Breckman, The Good Cop sees Tony Danza play a disgraced former NYPD officer, Tony Sr., who lives with his son, Tony, Jr., an honest cop who always follows the rules. Inevitably, Tony Sr. begins to interfere with Tony Jr.’s life, offering advice on everything from handling suspects to handling relationships.
Josh Groban signed up to co-star as Tony Jr. earlier this month, marking the singer’s first regular TV role, after appearances in series such as Parks and Recreation and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Now, he’s getting some veteran support from The Wire’s Whitlock Jr.. Familiar to fans of the HBO series as Senator Clay Davis, he’s also appeared in the recently cancelled TV version of The Mist, but the actor is now stranger to lighter roles: he has a recurring part in Veep as Secretary of Defense General George Maddox.
He will play an experienced homicide detective, Burl Loomis, who’s counting down the days until retirement. Deadline describes him as “slow on his feet but quick with a deadpan retort”, with “little patience for the department’s younger, more energetic members”.
Breckman serves as showrunner and exec producer, alongside Randy Zisk and Howard Klein. Netflix has ordered a first season of 10 episodes.
Josh Groban joins Tony Danza in Netflix’s The Good Cop
9th November 2017
Josh Groban will join Tony Danza in Netflix’s new series, The Good Cop.
The singer, who has sold over 30 million albums in his career to date, has increasingly stepped away from the microphone and towards the camera, from a cameo in Muppets Most Wanted to appearances in Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hollars, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Parks and Recreation.
Based on a format from Israeli production company YES, The Good Cop sees Tony Danza play a disgraced former NYPD officer, Tony Sr., who lives with his son, Tony, Jr., an honest cop who always follows the rules. Tony Sr. begins to interfere with Tony Jr.’s life, offering advice on everything from handling suspects to handling relationships.
Groban will play Tony Jr., reports Variety, marking his first regular TV role.
The series is created by Monk’s Andy Breckman, who serves as showrunner and exec producer, alongside Randy Zisk and Howard Klein. Danza is credited as a producer on the project, with Netflix ordering 10 episodes for its first season.
Tony Danza to star in Netflix series from Monk creator
20th June 2017
Tony Danza will star in a new Netflix original series, written by the creator of Monk.
Titled The Good Cop, the show will see the actor – a household name Stateside, thanks to his roles in 80s hits Taxi and Who’s the Boss – play a disgraced former NYPD officer, Tony Sr. He lives with his son, Tony, Jr., an honest cop who always follows the rules. And so, naturally, Tony Sr. begins to interfere with Tony Jr.’s life, offering advice on everything from handling suspects to handling relationships.
If you’re not familiar with Danza, you will be familiar with Andy Breckman – or at least, the TV show he created, Monk. The creator of that detective series will serve as showrunner and executive producer on The Goo Cop, with Randy Zisk and Howard Klein also on board as EPs. Zisk will direct the first episode, while Danza will also produce the series.
The idea is based on a a format from Israeli production company YES, who will also exec-produce the project. Put it all together and you have a case that added up to one logical conclusion for Netflix.
“We’re excited to bring viewers the return of Tony Danza, one of television’s most beloved icons,” Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix, told Variety. “‘The Good Cop’ is a funny, charming procedural series that we think our members will love.”
The streaming service has ordered 10 one-hour episodes.
