The Crown is leading the pack in this year’s British Academy Television Craft Awards. Netflix’ royal drama has picked up seven nominations, including Costume Design, Editing: Fiction, Photography & Lighting: Fiction, Production Design, Sound: Fiction and Special, Visual & Graphic Effects – as well as a Writer: Drama nomination for Peter Morgan.
BBC One’s Taboo is not far behind, with six nominations, including Costume Design, Make Up & Hair Design, Original Music, Photography & Lighting: Fiction, Sound: Fiction and Special, Visual & Graphic Effects.
Blue Planet II, which returned to the BBC after 16 years, also receives five nominations: two for Editing: Factual, and one each for Photography: Factual, Sound: Factual and Titles & Graphic Identity.
Other nominees in the the Writer: Drama category are Steven Knight for Peaky Blinders, and Nicole Taylor for Three Girls. Peaky Blinders receives a further four nominations in Costume Design, Editing: Fiction, Make Up & Hair Design and Sound: Fiction; and Three Girls is also nominated in the Director: Fiction and Editing: Fiction categories.
But Netflix’s influence extends beyond the throne, with Charlie Brooker nominated in the Writer: Drama category for anthology series Black Mirror, which has also received four further nods for Photography and Lighting: Fiction, Production Design, Sound: Fiction and Special, Visual & Graphic Effects.
The BBC’s online channel, BBC Three, also broke into the awards race this year, with mockumentary This Country – recent winner of three RTS Awards – picking up two nominations in the Breakthrough Talent and Writer: Comedy categories for Brits Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper. The remaining Writer: Comedy nominations go to Paul Coleman, Peter Kay and Sian Gibson for Peter Kay’s Car Share; Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney for Catastrophe, and Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith for Inside No. 9.
Other nominated programmes range from Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Detectorists to BBC Three’s Drugsland: Heroin Love Story, BBC One’s Line of Duty, ITV’s Little Boy Blue, and 5STAR’s Emerald City – the first ever BAFTA Crafts Awards for the channel. Amazon has one nomination, which is for The Grand Tour in the Sound: Factual category.
This year’s ceremony will be held at The Brewery in London on Sunday 22nd April and hosted by Stephen Mangan. For the first time, it will be live-streamed on Twitter and YouTube.
