Last Chance U is returning to our screens this March, but it’s changing things up with a new sport on the playbook: basketball.
The award-winning documentary series, originally inspired by a feature article in GQ magazine, has won acclaim and a huge audience of fans thank to its focus on the high stakes of junior college football. It follows players on a quest for redemption in the game, in the classroom and in life, as elite athletes in tough life circumstances struggle to realise their dreams.
“Netflix’s gripping, bruising sports documentary is a must-watch even if you don’t like football,” we wrote in our review.
After two seasons following the recruits at East Mississippi Community College, Season 3 and Season 4 turned to the Independence Pirates in Kansas, with a fifth and final season shining a spotlight on the junior college football programme at Laney College in Oakland, California.
From Greg Whiteley and the team behind the series, Last Chance U: Basketball takes a similarly honest, gritty look inside the world of community college basketball. Over the course of eight episodes, viewers will follow the East Los Angeles College Huskies (ELAC) in their high stakes chase to an unprecedented California state basketball championship. Led by passionate head coach John Mosley, the ELAC team is made up of former D1 recruits and powerhouse athletes hustling to prove themselves for a last chance to fulfill their dreams of playing at the next level. But the team is tested as the players battle adversity, inner demons, and emotions on and off the court.
Season 1 premieres on 12th March. Here’s the trailer:
Last Chance U: Basketball is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
