The Crown and Ted Lasso score big at Emmys 2021
David Farnor | On 20, Sep 2021
The Crown and Ted Lasso were the big winners at the 2021 Emmy awards, taking home a staggering number of prizes in the Primetime categories.
Netflix’s royal drama has reigned supreme in this year’s awards season, thanks to a season stuffed with drama, tragedy and scandal, and a cast talented enough to make the most of it. The result was a juggernaut on Sunday night that won every single category it was nominated in, including Best Drama, Best Actor, Best Actress, both Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Writing and Best Directing.
Apple TV+, though, also scored some big winners, with Ted Lasso storming the comedy categories – including prizes for Outstanding Comedy, Lead Actor for Jason Sudeikis, Supporting Actor for Brett Goldstein and Supporting Actress for Hannah Waddingham.
The other star of the night was Mare of Easttown, which won Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, plus Lead Actress for Kate Winslet. Michaela Coel also won the Outstanding Writing prize for a Limited Series for the groundbreaking I May Destroy You.
But this was Netflix’s evening and The Crown’s success – as well as wins such as Ewan McGregor being named Lead Actor in a Limited Series for Halston, not to mention The Queen’s Gambit taking home the Limited Series prize – meant that Netflix was crowned the overall winner, winning 44 Emmys on the night, the first time it has outperformed any other network or platform at the Emmys. It also dominated at the Creative Arts awards last week, with The Queen’s Gambit leading the pack. You can read the list of those winners here – or read on for the full list of Primetime Emmy winners:
