Rim of the World the most watched film on Netflix

Rim of the World was the most watched film on Netflix this week, the streaming giant has announced.
Netflix has always been famously closely guarded about its viewing figures, but has recently begun to release statistics for key new titles, mostly films, as it looks to build on Roma’s success at the Oscars and position itself as a major, established player in the feature film business. At the same time, it’s also now experimenting with releasing lists of the most popular titles on Netflix UK each week, to see if users find the regular round-up a useful indication of what’s trending.
The figures, of course, should be taken with a pinch of salt: Netflix’s count for a “viewer” is anyone who completes at least 70 per cent of one episode of a TV series or 70 per cent of a film – an indication, perhaps, of how much time people typically spend watching a single title on Netflix, or of how value attention spans have become in a competitive online age. Nonetheless, they highlight how much of an impact each new release makes, as word of mouth builds among subscribers.
Rim of the World, Netflix’s new summer blockbuster about a group of kids at camp who ward off an alien invasion, was the most popular on its opening week of release. Dead to Me, though, continued to hold in second place, followed by Jane the Virgin, which recently reached its final ever episode. Both of those were more popular than What/If, Netflix’s new psychological thriller, which was released last week and was only the third most watched series (and the fourth most popular title overall).
The Tom Cruise remake of The Mummy was the second most-watched film this week, following its recent addition to Netflix, ahead of fellow recent addition Stork – both higher than The Perfection (sixth) and Wine Country (seventh), Netflix’s newest original film releases, although Wine Country’s continuing presence in the top 10 suggests a strong word of mouth buzz.
