Red Notice sequels in the works at Netflix

Netflix is reportedly readying not just one but two sequels to Red Notice.
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, the action blockbuster follows a daring heist that brings together the FBI’s top profiler (Johnson) and two rival criminals (Gadot, Reynolds). Director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who has previously worked with Johnson on Skyscraper and Central Intelligence, also penned the script.
The result premiered in November on Netflix, with our review hailing it as “a lavish, polished romp”. A month later, Netflix announced that the film was its most-watched film to date, with 328 million viewing hours racked up.
The popularity came at some cost, though, with Netflix splashing a reported $200 million or more on the project, after Universal (which worked with Thurber and Johnson on Skyscraper) got cold feet on the expensive, star-studded three-hander. That deal in 2018 made it one of the streamer’s biggest investments in its original film slate, and now, Netflix is reportedly doubling down on that IP to turn it into a franchise.
Sources tell Deadline that the aim would be to film back-to-back sequels, with Thurber already beginning to writing the second and third movie in what would be a trilogy reminiscent of the A-list, heist-centric Ocean’s Eleven franchise.
Beau Flynn will reportedly return to produce via his Flynn Pictures Co banner, alongside Johnson, Hiram Garcia and Dany Garcia (Seven Bucks Productions). Thurber’s Bad Version Productions will also produce, with Flynn’s Scott Sheldon on board exec producer.
The aim would be to start production in 2023.
