Percy Jackson series in the works at Disney+
15th May 2020
Percy Jackson is headed to Disney+, with a new series based on the books in the works.
The novels, written by Rick Riordan, following Perseus “Percy” Jackson, just your normal, average team… until he discovers that he’s actually a demigod – the son of Greek god Poseidon, no less. The premise will be familiar to anyone over the age of 10, with Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters adapted into feature films in the early 2010s, with Logan Lerman in the lead.
Both of those films hailed from Fox and grossed more than $400 million worldwide. Now, with Disney having acquired Fox, and with the House of Mouse on the hunt for content it can bring to its Netflix rivalling Disney+, Percy’s popping up again.
It’s a ripe choice of franchise to adapt, with several more books unadapted in the series, including The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth and The Last Olympian. While no one connected to the feature outings has been announced as being involved, Riordan himself is.
He made the announcement on Twitter last night, alongside his wife, Becky.
“We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality,” he commented. “Following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one. Rest assured that Becky and I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show.”
