“The new adventures of Ed and Dex start now!” That’s the sound of Paramount+ serving up Good Burger 2 this autumn – and a new trailer gives us a first taste of the sequel.
Good Burger 2 is, of course, the follow-up to 90s feature film Good Burger, based on the sketch from the comedy series All That. The film follows Dexter Reed (Kenan Thompson) and original cashier Ed (Kel Mitchell), as they reunite in the present day at fast-food restaurant Good Burger with a new group of employees. We catch up with Dexter as he finds himself down on his luck, following the failure of another one of his inventions. Ed welcomes him back to Good Burger with open arms and gives him his old job back – but a plan to get back on his feet puts the fate of Good Burger at risk once again.
The film will premiere this Autumn 2023, exclusively on Paramount+ UK. Here’s the trailer:
Paramount+ orders Good Burger 2
18th March 2023
Paramount+ is ordering a second helping of Good Burger, with a sequel to the 1997 movie officially on the menu.
The comedy film starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell originated from the duo’s Nickelodeon days, when Mitchell played a character called Ed in a sketch. That spun off into a feature-length outing for the Kenan & Kel pair, which saw them play Dexter and Ed, two employees at the titular fast food chain – where workers greet customers with the same infamous catchphrase: “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?”
“Kenan and Kel shine in a super-sized slapstick comedy that cushions their comedic hit rate,” we wrote in our review of the film.
It was a hit at the time, as well as a cult favourite, leading to a 2015 skit on The Tonight Show starring both Thompson and Mitchell. A revival series of their sketch show All That also saw Mitchell reprise the role in 2019. Now, as Paramount looks to build its streaming presence by tapping into familiar IP and established characters – such as iCarly and Rugrats – it’s planning to return to the greasy counters of Good Burger for another portion.
Kenan Thompson broke the news on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday, saying: “I can’t believe it’s been a little over 25 years since great customer service was born at Good Burger! Being a part of something so many generations of people have come to love has made me so proud and now to be back where it all began working on the sequel is surreal! Love performing with my brother Kel and can’t wait to show the fans what these characters have been up to since we last saw them.”
The film will catch up with Dexter Reed (Thompson) as he finds himself down on his luck, following the failure of another one of his inventions. Ed (Mitchell) welcomes Dexter back to Good Burger with open arms and gives him his old job back. With a new crew working at Good Burger, Dexter devises a plan to get back on his feet but unfortunately puts the fate of Good Burger at risk once again.
Mitchell said in a statement: “Ed is one of those timeless characters that has brought so much joy and laughter to fans, and it’s such a beautiful blessing to still be doing it after all these years. It’s super awesome to come back and continue the stories of Dex, Ed and Good Burger for both the people who grew up watching and their kids.”
Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert, who co-wrote the original film, serve as writers and executive producers on Good Burger 2, with James III also serving as a writer on the project and Phil Traill on board to direct. Nickelodeon Studios will produce.
“We’re thrilled to take audiences’ orders for more laughter and adventures with the Good Burger crew,” said Tanya Giles, chief programming officer of Paramount Streaming. “Good Burger 2 will be a great addition to our 2023 programming slate and is sure to serve up everything All That fans and new viewers alike will enjoy.”
Production will begin in May with a release date planned for later this year.
