Oscars 2023: Where can I watch the nominees online?
David Farnor | On 11, Mar 2023
The nominations for the 2023 Oscars have been unveiled and Everything Everywhere All at Once is leading the race.
The action-comedy starring Michelle Yeoh has 11 nominations to its name, ahead of Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin, with nine nominations apiece.
Yeoh is nominated for Best Actress, but the film also boasts welcome nominations for her co-stars, Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan, along with Jamie Lee Curtis, not to mention nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. Banshees’ cast is also heavily nominated, including Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan. All Quiet on the Western Front – which boasts a record-tying 14 BAFTA nominations – has no acting nods but is up for Best Picture and Best International Feature Film.
In addition to Everything, Banshees and All Quiet, the Best Picture list includes Avatar: The Way o Water, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tar, Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness and Women Talking.
Surprise acting nods include Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie, which picked up an organic word-of-mouth campaign in recent works, who is competing for Best Actress alongside Cate Blanchett (Tar), Michelle Yeoh, Ana de Armas (for her role as Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s Blonde) and Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans). Paul Mescal, meanwhile, has made the Best Actor nominees, alongside Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser (The Whale) and Bill Nighy (Living).
Notable snubs include The Woman King’s director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, which leaves the directing nominees an entirely male field, and The Woman King’s star, Viola Davis, and Till’s star, Danielle Deadwyler, meaning that 9 of the 10 leading performance nominees are white. The supporting character categories are more diverse, with Angela Bassett nominated for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, alongside Hong Chau for The Whale, Kerry Condon for Banshees and Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has five nods overall, just behind The Fabelmans on seven and Elvis on eight. Netflix, meanwhile, has 14 nods in total, including ones for animated films The Sea Beast and Pinocchio, behind distributor A24 on 17, and technically Disney on 22, thanks to its component corporate parts of Searchlight Pictures, Walt Disney Studios and Nat Geo.
The winners will be announced on 12th March in a ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who previously hosted the awards in 2017 and 2018. (For more on how to watch the Oscars online, click here.)
