Netflix’s Roma crowned Best Film as The Favourite rules the BAFTAs
David Farnor | On 11, Feb 2019
Roma made movie history last night, when it won Best Film at the 2019 BAFTAs, becoming the first streaming film to be given the top prize by the British Academy Film Awards.
Alfonso Cuaron’s black-and-white Mexican masterpiece – read our five-star review here – bagged the top two prizes, Best Film and Best Director, placing the intimate epic in pole position to do the same at the Oscars later this month. It also won Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Cinematography, converting an impressive four of its record seven nominations.
Roma’s reign was matched only by one other film: Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, which ruled over the remaining categories to take home the most prizes on the night. The period romp walked away with a regal seven wins, including Best British Film, Best Supporting Actress for Rachel Weisz, Best Original Screenplay, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
“We’re having an amazing night, aren’t we?” said Olivia Colman, who took home a deserved Best Actress gong for her role in the 18th century comedy. “We are going to get so pissed later.”
The controversial Bohemian Rhapsody won two awards, including Best Actor for Rami Malek’s portrayal of Freddie Mercury, while Mahershala Ali in Green Book trumped Richard E. Grant in Can You Ever Forgive Me? to win Best Supporting Actor.
Letitia Wright, the scene-stealing star of Black Panther, won the Rising Star award, voted for the by the public, while Outstanding British Debut went to Beast.
While The Favourite dominated most of the proceedings, though, 2019 marks a year when things have changed significantly in the movie landscape, with not only Beast available to stream on Amazon Prime and the short film winners (73 Cows and Roughhouse) available to watch on Curzon Home Cinema, but the Best Film winner itself available to watch instantly around the world at any time.
Cuaron thanked Netflix in his speech for having the “faith and courage to get behind a black-and-white film about a domestic worker, subtitled from Spanish, and bring it to audiences around the world”.
