Netflix acquires Clark Johnson’s Juanita
27th April 2017
Netflix has acquired the global rights to Juanita, the new film from Clark Johnson.
The deal, reported by Deadline, marks the streaming giant’s continuing efforts to work directly with independent filmmakers. In the case of Johnson, who has worked on everything from The Wire to Homeland, it marks something of a reunion: Johnson has previously helmed an episode of both Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix series The Get Down and Marvel’s Luke Cage.
The movie stars Alfre Woodard, also a veteran of Netflix’s Luke Cage series, as well as the streaming service’s TV version of A Series of Unfortunate Events. She plays Juanita, who is fed up with her deadbeat grown-up children and her marginal urban existence. So, she hops on a bus to Montana to reinvent her life.
The film is based on the book Dancing on the Edge of the Roof by Sheila Williams, with Roderick Spencer penning the script. It’s produced by Homegrown Pictures’ Stephanie Allain and Mel Jones, alongside Jason Michael Berman.
Production is currently underway in Virginia, with a cast that includes Adam Beach, Blair Underwood, Marcus Henderson and LaTanya Richardson.
The deal follows Netflix’s acquisition of Burning Sands, another indie film starring Alfre Woodard. That was released earlier this year – you can read our review of it here.
