The Crown, Line of Duty and Black Mirror lead 2018 BAFTA TV nominees
James R | On 04, Apr 2018
The 2018 BAFTA TV nominations have been announced and The Crown, Line of Duty and Black Mirror are leading the way.
Netflix will be hoping to reign supreme this year, after its royal drama was nominated for multiple awards last year, but only took home Craft prizes for Costume Design and Visual Effects. In 2018, The Crown is back once more in force, with three nominations, including Best Actress for Claire Foy, Supporting Actress for Vanessa Kirby and Best Drama Series.
Netflix’s Black Mirror is also a big hitter, with its fourth season drawing nods for Jimmi Simpson as Supporting Actor in sci-fi satire USS Callister and Joe Cole as Lead Actor in romantic comedy Hang the DJ, which also is nominated for Best Single Drama, competing against BBC Three’s Murdered for Being Different and BBC Two’s Against the Law and King Charles III.
The streaming giant has competition, though, from BBC One’s behemoth Line of Duty, which is also up for Best Drama and Best Actress for Thandie Newton, plus Supporting Actor for Adrian Dunbar. BBC One’s Three Girls completes the top flight shows bagging three nods apiece, with nominations for Supporting Actress Liv Hill, Leading Actress Molly Windsor and Best Mini-Series, where it competes with Howards End, The Moorside and The State.
Completing the Drama Series category is returning drama Peaky Blinders and The End of the F###ing World, written by BAFTA Breakthrough Brit, Charlie Covell.
Other BAFTA Breakthrough Brits nominated are writers Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper who receive a nomination for BBC Three’s This Country for Scripted Comedy. Daisy May Cooper is also nominated in Female Performance in a Comedy Programme. Also nominated in the Scripted Comedy category are Chewing Gum, Timewasters and Catastrophe, for which Sharon Horgan receives a nomination in the Female Performance in a Comedy Programme category. Also in Female Performance in a Comedy Programme are Anna Maxwell Martin for Motherland and Sian Gibson for Peter Kay’s Car Share, both of which were released all-at-once as BBC iPlayer box sets.
Receiving his first Leading Actor nomination is Jack Rowan for Born to Kill. In the Leading Actress category, Sinead Keenan receives her first BAFTA nomination for her performance in ITV’s Little Boy Blue. In the Supporting Actor category two further actors receive their first BAFTA nominations. Anupam Kher is nominated for his performance in the adaptation of Satnam Sanghera’s memoir, The Boy with the Topknot, and Brían F. O’Byrne receives a nomination for Little Boy Blue. Anna Friel receives her first BAFTA nomination in the Supporting Actress category for Broken, alongside her co-star Sean Bean, who is nominated for Leading Actor; and first-time nominee Julie Hesmondhalgh is nominated for her Supporting Actress performance in Broadchurch.
Other first-time performance nominees include Samson Kayo for Male Performance in a Comedy Programme for BBC Three’s sketch show, Famalam, and Sandi Toksvig, nominated for QI in the Entertainment Performance category. Also nominated for Male Performance in a Comedy Programme is Asim Chaudhry for BBC Three’s People Just Do Nothing, Rob Brydon for Sky Atlantic’s The Trip to Spain, and Toby Jones for BBC Two’s Detectorists.
Completing the Entertainment Performance category is Adam Hills, who receives his second nomination for Channel 4’s The Last Leg, which is also nominated in the Comedy Entertainment Programme category; last year’s winner, Michael McIntyre, nominated for Michael McIntyre’s Big Show; and Graham Norton, for The Graham Norton Show, who receives his 16th BAFTA nomination. Michael McIntyre’s Big Show also receives a nomination in Entertainment Programme alongside Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain’s Got Talent and The Voice UK.
Nominated alongside The Last Leg in the Comedy Entertainment Programme category are UKTV’s Taskmaster, BBC One’s Would I Lie to You? and BBC Three’s Murder in Successville.
The Short Form Programme category, new for 2018, recognises programmes of between three and 20 minutes across all genres, premiering on a broadcast or online platform. Sky Arts’ Morgana Robinson’s Summer is nominated, but BBC Three dominates the category, including docoumentary Britain’s Forgotten Men, reality web series Eating with My Ex and YouTuber satire Pls Like.
Blue Planet II, which has returned to the BBC after 16 years, is nominated in the Specialist Factual category, alongside Basquiat: Rage to Riches, Blitz: The Bombs that Changed Britain and Elizabeth I’s Secret Agents. Nominees for the Reality & Constructed Factual category, meanwhile, include Celebrity Hunted, Love Island, Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds and The Real Full Monty.
The BAFTA TV awards are always commendable for their focus on British productions, with HBO and others only making their mark in the International Category. In 2018, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale leads the way as the favourite, followed by FX’s Feud: Bette and Joan and HBO’s Big Little Lies, as well as documentary The Vietnam War.
And what of perennial awards favourite Game of Thrones? That can be found fighting for the title of the publicly-voted Virgin TV Must-See Moment. Game of Thrones: Viserion is Killed by the Night King faces fierce competition from Blue Planet II: Mother Pilot Whale Grieves, Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor Revealed, Line of Duty: Huntley’s Narrow Escape, One Love Manchester: Ariana Grande Sings ‘One Last Time’ and Love Island: Stormzy Makes a Surprise Appearance.
The awards will be handed out at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 13th May and hosted by Sue Perkins. Here’s the full list of nominees:
