The Punisher gets release date of 17th November
David Farnor | On 19, Oct 2017
The Punisher’s official release date has been confirmed as Friday 17th November.
After much speculation – and a delay in the wake of the tragic shooting in Las Vegas – Netflix has announced that the Hell’s Kitchen spin-off series will premiere next month.
The show sees Jon Bernthal reprise his role as Frank Castle, who, after exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, uncovers a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York’s criminal underworld.
The series is executive produced by showrunner Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal), Jim Chory (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s Luke Cage) and Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s Luke Cage) who also serves as Marvel’s Head of Television.
Here’s the new trailer revealing the release date:
Netflix pulls The Punisher from New York Comic-Con
5th October 2017
Netflix has pulled The Punisher from New York Comic-Con this weekend.
In the wake of the tragic shooting in Las Vegas, the streaming service’s decision not to preview and promote its latest Marvel series at the New York event is a sensitive one, given the nature of its protagonist.
“We are stunned and saddened by this week’s senseless act in Las Vegas,” Netflix and Marvel said in a joint statement. “After careful consideration, Netflix and Marvel have decided it wouldn’t be appropriate for Marvel’s The Punisher to participate in New York Comic-Con. Our thoughts continue to be with the victims and those affected by this tragedy.”
The 13-episode spin-off from Daredevil follows Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), a firearm-wielding vigilante, who was introduced by Marvel several decades ago, but feels inappropriate to view as a source of entertainment given recent events.
The panel was set to run on Saturday, with Bernthal, Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb and others in attendance, where there were expected to preview footage of episodes and also confirm the show’s release date. With that recently reported by one publication as being as soon as Friday 13th October, Netflix and Marvel May continue their tact and push back the show’s release too.
NYCC told Deadline they would try to fill The Punisher’s slot with a different panel.
“New York Comic Con wholeheartedly supports Netflix & Marvel’s decision to cancel Saturday’s The Punisher panel,” the organisation said. “NYCC takes great pride in offering fans the best in pop culture programming and we are working tirelessly to fill that time spot at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. We will continue to update fans via our social channels throughout the weekend.”
The Punisher gets a new poster… and an October release date?
4th October 2017
The Punisher has got itself a new poster, courtesy of Netflix this week, as the streaming giant continues to drip-feed details about the upcoming Marvel TV spin-off.
While Netflix has been keeping its lips sealed on when that series is arriving, though, the cat may now already be out of the bag, courtesy of Total Film, which published the top-secret release in its latest issue. Spotted by someone on Reddit (via Heroic Hollywood), the magazine reported that The Punisher will be released on Netflix on Friday 13th October.
Netflix has not commented on the report, but the date seems a good fit, given that the streaming service has been decidedly coy about the show’s exact air date, ever since an actor seemed to let slip that it would arrive in November. Whether an intentional move to drive up more buzz, or a result of shifting schedules, it now looks very possible that Frank Castle’s vigilante actions will be unleashed in full next week.
You can expect to find out for sure at New York Comic Con this weekend, when Marvel will have a panel to promote its upcoming TV series and films. The Weeknd will be there too, suggesting something more special than just a date announcement could be on the cards:

The series is executive produced by showrunner Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal), Jim Chory (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s Luke Cage) and Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s Luke Cage) who also serves as Marvel’s Head of Television. The Punisher gets a full trailer (but still no release date)
20th September 2017
Another day, another week closer to the release of Netflix’s The Punisher – and while we still don’t have an exact premiere date yet, we do now have a full official trailer to get us in the mood. And the mood is: violent.
The spin-off from Daredevil sees Jon Bernthal reprise his role as the former military man-turned-vigilate, Frank Castle. After exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, his solo series sees Frank uncover a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York’s criminal underworld. Now known throughout the city as The Punisher, he must discover the truth about injustices that affect more than his family alone.
The show is executive produced by showrunner Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal), Jim Chory (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s Luke Cage) and Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s Luke Cage). And while the cast includes Deborah Ann Woll also reprising her role from Daredevil, the tone is set to be much darker, much grittier, and much more violent.
Here’s the trailer – which means that a release date can’t be far away…
Netflix’s The Punisher gets new photos and poster – but no release date
13th September 2017
Marvel’s The Punisher is getting closer, and Netflix has released a new batch of images giving us our first close-up look at Frank Castle’s solo series.
After exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, the former military man (Jon Bernthal) uncovers a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York’s criminal underworld. Now known throughout the city as The Punisher, he must discover the truth about injustices that affect more than his family alone.
Bernthal reprises his role after stealing the show in Daredevil Season 2, with Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) serving as Executive Producer and Showrunner. Other cast members include Deborah Ann Woll, also reprising her role from Daredevil as Karen Page, Michael Nathanson (The Knick), Jaime Ray Newman (Bates Motel), Daniel Webber (11.22.63), Paul Schulze (Nurse Jackie) as a high-ranking member of the CIA, and Jason R. Moore (A Lonely Place for Dying) as Curtis Hoyle, a friend of Frank and one of the few people who knows he is alive.
The new images give us a better glimpse of the supporting ensemble. They follow the unveiling of the episode titles by Netflix and Marvel – you can read those below – but the information everyone wants is The Punisher air date, and, in an usual publicity move, the streaming giant is being deliberately coy about when the series will land. We’ll bring you word on the rumoured November date as soon as we have it, but until then, here are the new pictures, plus the menacing new artwork for the show.

The Punisher episode titles revealed along with release date tease
30th August 2017
When does The Punisher get released on Netflix? That’s anyone’s guess, but we’re slowly getting more information about Frank Castle’s solo spin-off series, as Netflix has revealed the episode titles for the series.
The show, which was ordered shortly after Daredevil Season 2 finished, sees Jon Bernthal reprise his role as the former soldier, with Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) serving as Executive Producer and Showrunner.
The series promises to “further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero”, with additional cast members including Deborah Ann Woll, reprising her role as Karen Page, Michael Nathanson (The Knick), Jaime Ray Newman (Bates Motel), Daniel Webber (11.22.63), Paul Schulze (Nurse Jackie) as a high-ranking member of the CIA, and Jason R. Moore (A Lonely Place for Dying) as Curtis Hoyle, a friend of Frank and one of the few people who knows he is alive.
Shohreh Aghdashloo has also joined the show, with EW reporting that she will play Farah Madani, an Iranian psychiatrist who lives in the USA and the mother of Dinah Madani (Amber Rose Revah), a “skilled Homeland Security agent who’s vexed by the Punisher”.
Aghdashloo, who also stars in Syfy’s The Expanse and appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand, also had an Emmy-winning part in HBO’s House of Saddam, which was produced by Lightfoot.
If that extra casting news wasn’t enough, the show’s official Twitter account has also been spewing out morse code this week, with each tweet revealing the name of another instalment in the programme.

The Punisher poster revealed by actor as November release date looms
1st June 2017
It’s been many months since Marvel and Netflix announced that they had ordered a spin-off series from Daredevil featuring antihero The Punisher.
Played by Jon Bernthal in Season 2 of Matt Murdock’s solo series, Frank Castle made such an impression that fans clamoured for more. Bernthal will reprise his role as the former soldier in his own solo show, with Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) serving as Executive Producer and Showrunner.
With no real word on the project’s progress since the show’s casting, it’s been all quiet on The Punisher front, with production on the spin-off waiting until shooting had completed on crossover event series The Defenders. With that now on the way to our screens on 18th August, though, details and a promotional campaign for The Punisher will no doubt kick in at the end of summer. Before then, Moore has given us our first semi-official look at the series’ poster.
Moore tweeted out the artwork yesterday, unveiling a beautifully simple poster featuring the Punisher logo and little more. He has since deleted that tweet, but Comic Book Movie grabbed the picture. Moore also recently posted on Instagram to confirm that The Punisher is “coming in the fall”, which places its premiere at some point in the months following The Defenders’ release.
Indeed, director Dearbhla Walsh has hinted that a November premiere is on the cards for The Punisher. The Emmy-winner filmmaker, whose credits range from Penny Dreadful and Amazon’s The Collection to BBC’s Little Dorrit, recently shot some of Fargo Season 3. Her two episodes on the FX series followed a stint on one episode of The Punisher.
Talking to THR about crossing over the pond to direct in the US, she let slip the month of release: “One other time that hasn’t been aired yet, which was an episode for the new Marvel series The Punisher, which I did just before Christmas, but it’s not airing until November. I directed that in New York and edited in LA…”
In the meantime, watch this space for the official release of the poster, which, following Moore’s deleted post, is likely to be very soon.
Marvel’s The Punisher spin-off adds new cast members
26th October 2016
Marvel’s The Punisher spin-off has added a wave of new cast members to the show.
The Netflix original series, which was announced earlier this year, will see Jon Bernthal reprise his role of Frank Castle, who became a fan favourite after his appearance in Daredevil Season 2.
Daniel Webber (11.22.63) has been cast as Lewis Walcott, a young veteran who has had a difficult time re-assimilating into Civilian Society.
Jason R. Moore (A Lonely Place for Dying) joins as Curtis Hoyle, a friend of Frank Castle’s and one of the few people who knows he is alive.
Paul Schulze (Nurse Jackie) will play Rawlins, a high-ranking member of the CIA whose operations in Afghanistan intersect with Frank Castle.
Jaime Ray Newman (Bates Motel) will play Sarah Lieberman, Micro’s wife (played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach) whose marriage has made her life far more complicated.
Michael Nathanson (The Knick) has been cast as Sam Stein, a Homeland agent who is challenged by his partnership with Dinah (Amber Rose Revah).
“We couldn’t have asked for a more talented group of actors to round out the cast,” says Executive Producer and showrunner Steve Lightfoot. “It’s a thrill to watch them each bring their characters to life with such layered, nuanced performances.”
“Marvel TV is very proud of the cast of The Punisher,” adds Executive Producer Jeph Loeb, “Each actors brings a special promise who surround Jon Bernthal’s exceptional performance.”
The new additions join the previously announced Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, returning alongside Bernthal from Daredevil. Ben Barnes will also be a series regular as Billy Russo.
Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) will write the series’ first two episodes in addition to serving as showrunner and Executive Producer. Jim Chory will also serve as Executive Producer along with Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television.
The show will be released on Netflix in 2017.
Deborah Ann Woll joins The Punisher spin-off
10th October 2016
Deborah Ann Woll has officially joined the cast of Netflix and Marvel’s The Punisher spin-off.
The series was finally announced earlier this year, following mass speculation by fans who loved Jon Bernthal’s take on the comic book character in Daredevil Season 2.
Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle, with Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) serving as Executive Producer and Showrunner for the show. The standalone series promises to “further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own”, with shooting set to commence following production on The Defenders, Marvel’s crossover event series, which arrives hot on the heels of Iron Fist in 2017.
While not much is known about The Punisher’s solo outing, though, what has been confirmed is that Deborah Ann Woll will reprise her role of Karen Page from Daredevil in the show, with the duo’s chemistry being one of the highlights of Frank Castle’s initial appearance.
The news was announced by Marvel at its New York Comic Con panel, where it also unveiled a new trailer for Iron Fist, confirmed that Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple will appear in that series, and also revealed that Sigourney Weaver will play the villain in The Defenders.

Netflix officially orders The Punisher spin-off series
29th April 2016
After months of rumours, Netflix has officially ordered a spin-off solo series for The Punisher.
Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle, introduced to fans earlier this year in the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil, with Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) serving as Executive Producer and Showrunner in addition to writing the series’ first two episodes.
“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from Marvel’s Daredevil,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, in a statement today. “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”
“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in Marvel’s Daredevil, and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,” aded Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.
“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” commented Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”
The show marks the sixth series ordered so far, as part of Netflix and Marvel TV’s ongoing collaboration, including the upcoming Luke Cage and Iron Fist, which will build to crossover event series The Defenders.
Netflix’s Punisher to get a spin-off? What we know so far about Frank Castle
17th January 2016
Netflix may be planning a Punisher spin-off series.
Rumour has it that the streaming giant is so taken with the gun-toting Frank Castle, who will appear in the second season of Daredevil next month, that they are considering giving him his own show.
TV Line reports that Netflix “thisclose” to pulling the trigger on the spin-off, which would see The Walking Dead’s Jon Bernthal reprise his role as the controversial vigilante.
Netflix and Marvel have declined to comment on the report, although they are far from opposed to the idea of overlapping their superhero stories, with Luke Cage set for his own solo outing after appearing in Jessica Jones and Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple appearing in both Jessica Jones and Daredevil. Indeed, the whole run of Hell’s Kitchen series are intended to build up to crossover event show The Defenders.
The rumour (apparently confirmed by THR) follows speculation that The Punisher might have even replaced Iron Fist as the fourth series in that run, with the latter taking a while to get off the ground. With that rumour firmly quashed in December by the announcement of Scott Buck as showrunner for the series, TV Line’s report suggests that still doesn’t rule out a solo Punisher gig.
The news also follows an announcement from ABC that Marvel is developing a spin-off from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with the network officially ordering a pilot for “Marvel’s Most Wanted”.
But while Marvel’s tendency to expand its on-screen universe is no secret, what exactly do we know about The Punisher?
As readers of the comics will tell you, Frank Castle is ex-Special Forces, a man whose tragic past has turned him into a vigilante with the same aim as Daredevil – to clean up the streets of Hell’s Kitchen – but with drastically different (and violent) methods.
Speaking to EW last year, showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez confirmed that they wanted him to be a divisive character, with the show deliberately ambiguous over whether he’s a hero or a villain.
“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people – the way we force Matt – to second-guess themselves,” Petrie said. “Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s*t. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”
In an interview with EW yesterday, Bernthal has also shed some light on his character. We’ve taken some spoiler-free quotes from that conversation:
“I can’t give too much away, but what’s interesting is the way [showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez] have made his story a slow burn,” commented Bernthal. “It’s interesting to find this guy at the point we find him. You want an evolution and a process. He starts in one place and will end up in another.”
He said that what’s important is the “emptiness inside” Frank.
“He’s dealing with this unbelievable loss. There’s unbelievable anger and hatred and shame… I had to put myself in as dark of place as possible the last six months.”
That darkness isn’t about to let up either, he suggested: “As this character develops into what he becomes, he becomes more violent and more raw.”
“One of the things I’m most excited for is I’m hoping the audience will go back and forth,” he added. “There are things you can identify with and get behind, and there are things when the character pushes it and you can’t get behind him anymore. And that’s what I want. I think that’s the nature of the character. This is a guy who pushes the envelope. He’s brutal, but he’s coming from a place of unbelievable hurt. And the best thing about the character is he just doesn’t care. It’s a highly personal mission he’s on and if he offends you, it’s completely unimportant to him.”
Daredevil Season 2 lands on Friday 18th March. The trailer’s below – or you can also see some new stills, including images of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, here.
