Netflix storms Screen Actors Guild awards as diversity wins

Leonardo DiCaprio won for The Revenant. Brie Larson won for Room. But if that sounds like the Academy Awards, don’t be fooled: the 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards were nothing like them. If the awards season is under fire for an ongoing lack of diversity, the SAG voters clearly didn’t get the memo.
Spotlight won the prize last night for Best Ensemble, thanks to its cast’s impressive performances in bringing the tale of the Boston Globe’s investigation of pedophile Catholic priests to the screen, but diversity was evident in almost every other category. How to Get Away with Murder’s Viola Davis won Outstanding Female Actor in a Drama Series, while Queen Latifah bagged Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries for HBO’s Bessie.
“We’ve become a society of trending topics,” Davis said at the ceremony. “Diversity is not a trending topic.”
The rest of the night continued to reward performers from different backgrounds, with Idris Elba winning not only for his role in BBC’s Luther, but also taking home the supporting prize for his role in Beasts of No Nation – a towering performance that, despite a Golden Globe and BAFTA nomination, was snubbed by the Academy Awards this year.
Netflix’s first film wasn’t the only streaming title to enjoy success, though, as Kevin Spacey won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama for House of Cards and Uzo Aduba won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy for Orange Is the New Black. Indeed, Jenji Kohan’s show is arguably the most diverse show on television, with a cast of faces from all walks of life, not to mention a writing team that understands and is willing to discuss topics such as race. It’s only fitting, then, that the show won the award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
With four SAG gongs under Netflix’s belt – only one of them for a white actor – and Jeffrey Tambor taking home the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy with Amazon’s Transparent (another show tackling important questions of identity, society and discrimination), have online services created a more open and diverse playing field for broaching such subjects than traditional Hollywood?
