George C Wolfe will direct Rustin for Netflix.
Rustin tells the story of the charismatic, gay, civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, who overcame an onslaughts of obstacles, and altered the course of American history by organising the 1963 march on Washington.
The film is produced by Higher Ground Productions, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, which is focused on telling the stories that embody the values the Obamas have championed throughout their lives.
Higher Ground Productions’ Priya Swaminathan and Tonia Davis will produce, alongside Academy Award winner Bruce Cohen (American Beauty). The film is written by Dustin Lance Black (Milk), who will also produce.
If all that talent wasn’t enough, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom helmer George C Wolfe has also boarded the project. A previous DGA and NBR winner (Lackawanna Blues), Wolfe is a five-time Tony Award winner, and known as one of America’s most important and influential cultural voices.
