Trailer: Trollhunters Part 3 prepares to say goodbye
David Farnor | On 15, May 2018
Trollhunters returns this May for its third and final part, and a new trailer gives us a look at the animated series as it prepares to say goodbye.
Guillermo del Toro’s show, produced by DreamWorks, follows Jim Lake Jr., an ordinary kid in the seemingly quiet town of Arcadia, who embarks on an extraordinary adventure in a hidden world right beneath his feet – and finds himself locked in a troll battle to save humankind. The late Anton Yelchin voices the part of Jim for Part 1 and 2, and again returns for Part 3, having recorded the majority of his lines.
Now, though, as the show arrives at its end game, the baton is passed on, with Emile Hirsch stepping into Yelchin’s shoes to complete the part. Indeed, Hirsch will be joined by two new cast members in Season 3: Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany and Diego Luna. They will voice Aja and Krel, two students who unwittingly come to the aid of the Trollhunters as they fight Morgana – and will then become the leads in the next series in del Toro’s Tales of Arcadia trilogy, in which Trollhunters was the first entry.
The series’ third and final installment premieres on Friday 25th May, introducing legendary wizard merlin and paving the way for the franchise’s next chapter.
Emile Hirsch to continue Anton Yelchin’s role in Trollhunters Part 3
27th April 2018
Emile Hirsch will continue Anton Yelchin’s lead role in the third season of Trollhunters, which arrives on Netflix in May.
Guillermo del Toro’s animated series, produced by DreamWorks, first premiered back in 2016, introducing families to the seemingly quiet town of Arcadia and Jim Lake Jr., an ordinary kid who embarks on an extraordinary adventure in a hidden world right beneath his feet. Nominated for six Annie Awards, the first season led the Creative Arts Daytime Emmys with six wins, more than any other programme, including writing for an animated program (Marc Guggenheim), directing (Rodrigo Blaas, Guillermo del Toro), casting (Ania O’Hare, Mary Hildalgo) and a voice acting win for Kelsey Grammer.
The Frasier star is just one of several high-profile names on the vocal cast, including The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun, The Addams Family’s Anjelica Huston and Ron Perlman’s Ron Perlman. In the lead was Anton Yelchin, who had fortunately already recorded his lines for Season 2 before his tragic death. He had also recorded the majority of his lines for Season 3, Guillermo del Toro and Netflix have confirmed, with Into the Wild’s Emile Hirsch stepping in to complete the part.
Producers have reportedly found a unique way to incorporate this voice transition, so that it is organic to the story and allows Yelchin’s legacy and role to continue. Yelchin’s performance has been left intact where possible, with some parts merged with that of Hirsch, a dear friend of the late actor.
Hirsch will be joined by two new cast members in Season 3: Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany and Diego Luna. They will voice Aja and Krel, two students who unwittingly come to the aid of the Trollhunters as they fight Morgana.
While this is the final season of Trollhunters, Aja and Krel will then go on to become the leads of the next instalment in del Toro’s Tales of Arcadia trilogy, of which Trollhunters was the first. They will comprise 3 Below, in 2018, and Wizards, in 2019.
Trollhunters Season 3 will premiere on 25th May and will see the Trollhunters race to stop Gunmar from shrouding the world in darkness, seeking out legendary wizard Merlin to help.
Netflix renews Trollhunters for third and final season

Netflix has renewed Trollhunters for a third and final season.
Guillermo del Toro’s animated series, produced by DreamWorks, first premiered back in 2016, introducing families to the seemingly quiet town of Arcadia and an ordinary kid who embarks on an extraordinary adventure in a hidden world right beneath his feet. Recently nominated for six Annie Awards, the first season led the Creative Arts Daytime Emmys with six wins, more than any other program, including writing for an animated program (Marc Guggenheim), directing (Rodrigo Blaas, Guillermo del Toro), casting (Ania O’Hare, Mary Hildalgo) and a voice acting win for Kelsey Grammer.
That second season premieres on Netflix on Friday 15th December, but the streaming giant has already ordered a final run of the show. There is no word on how Yelchin will be replaced in the lead role, but Netflix has confirmed that Season 3 will premiere in 2018. It is one of six new animated DreamWorks projects announced by Netflix today, which includes a reboot of She-Ra. Previous shows made by the duo include Dragons: Race to the Edge, Voltron Legendary Defender, All Hail King Julien, and Dinotrux, with the whole slate winning a combined total of 17 Daytime Creative Arts Emmys and six Annie Awards.
