The OA will not return for Season 3

The OA will not return for a third season, Netflix has confirmed.
The sci-fi mystery, which is created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, blew people away with its story of Prairie Johnson (Marling), a missing blind girl who returned to the community she grew up in – with her sight restored. Some hailed her a miracle, others a dangerous mystery, but Prairie wouldn’t talk about her seven missing years with anyone except four teenagers whom she recruited for a mission. That was the only information available on the series before it launched, with Netflix springing the whole thing upon unexpected subscribers back in 2016.
Season 2 opened things up even further to a bigger, more ambitious epic, spanning alternate dimensions, alternate people and… an octopus.
“The OA Part II still boggles the mind with stunning ambition, even as it demystifies its own miracles,” we wrote in our glowing review of the second season.
Despite a highly positive reception twice over, though, Netflix has decided not to order another season from Marling and Batmanglij.
“We are incredibly proud of the 16 mesmerizing chapters of The OA, and are grateful to Brit and Zal for sharing their audacious vision and for realising it through their incredible artistry,” Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix, said in a statement. “We look forward to working with them again in the future, in this and perhaps many other dimensions.”
The OA Part II: New photos and plot details unveiled
14th March 2019
It’s only a week until The OA finally returns to our screens, and new photos give us a closer look at Part II.
The images, which focus on the work by costume designer Meghan Kasperlik and lead actress stylist Megan Gray, give us a sense of the mood and tone of Part II. The story follows OA as she navigates a new dimension, one in which she had a completely different life as a Russian heiress, and one in which she once again finds herself as Hap’s captive.
Part II introduces Karim Washington, a private detective tasked with finding a missing teen. His path crosses with OA, as they try to solve the mystery of the teen’s whereabouts and a house on Nob Hill connected to the disappearance of several teenagers. Meanwhile, back in the first dimension, BBA, Angie and the boys find themselves on a journey to understand the truth behind OA’s story and the incredible realities she described.
The OA Part II is once again coming from visionaries Brit Marling (also starring in the show) and Zal Batmanglij, who created and wrote the eight-chapter odyssey together. Joining Marling on screen are Jason Isaacs, Emory Cohen, Patrick Gibson, Phyllis Smith, Brendan Meyer, Ian Alexander, Brandon Perea and Sharon van Etten, with newcomers including Kingsley Ben-Adir and Chloë Levine. Paz Vega, Irene Jacob and Riz Ahmed will also guest star.
The OA Part II lands on Friday 22nd March. Here are the pics – or scroll down for the trailer.
First trailer: The OA Part 2 set for March release
27th February 2019
No one survives alone. That’s the message from The OA Part 2, which finally has a confirmed release date – and a trailer to boot.
Netflix’s sci-fi mystery, which is created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, blew people away with its story of Prairie Johnson (Marling), a missing blind girl who returned to the community she grew up in – with her sight restored.
Now, it’s returning for Part 2 and promising to catch us off guard all over again, with the first trailer for the programme’s sophomore run opening things up into a whole new reality. Alternate dimensions, alternate people and endless new mysteries, the teaser paves the way for a bigger, more ambitious epic, with Britain’s own Andrew Haigh stepping up to the helm for multiple episodes.
Joining Marling and the returning cast in Season 2 are guest stars Riz Ahmed, Paz Vega, Vincent Kartheiser, Sheila Vand, and iconic actress Irene Jacob. You can see them all in action on Friday 22nd March, when Part II lands all-at-once on Netflix. Watch the trailer below – and get ready to start writing down a whole lot of questions.
The OA fans will be “very happy” with Season 2
20th July 2017
Fans of The OA will be “very happy” with Season 2, Netflix’s Vice President of Original Series, Cindy Holland, has promised.
The series, which is created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, follows Prairie Johnson (Marling), a missing blind girl who returns to the community she grew up in – with her sight restored. Some hail her a miracle, others a dangerous mystery, but Prairie won’t talk about her seven missing years with anyone except four teenagers whom she recruits for a mission. That was the only information available on the series before it launched, with Netflix springing the whole thing upon unexpected subscribers back in 2016. The result was a veritable sensation, with its sweeping scale, mind-boggling mystery and jaw-dropping visuals combining to create a surprise hit in every sense of the words.
“Halfway through the first episode, you’ll have to take a leap of faith to go with it. Spoiler alert: if you do, you won’t regret it,” we wrote in our review of the first episode.
It was a few months until Netflix dropped another surprise: that it had already renewed the show for a second run. So when Netflix hosted its TCA press tour event this weekend, it was only natural that some media outlets would push for more details on the show’s return. Holland was tight-lipped about Season 2, but revealed that she had seen parts of it.
“I’ve seen some early cuts and the fans will be very happy,” she teased.
Indeed, Netflix is confident enough to have bought into the show’s initial vision for several seasons of its supernatural, metaphysical mystery.
“I think from the very beginning, when Brit [Marling] and Zal [Batmanglij] pitched us a five-season arc, we were really excited and sat at the edge of our seats when they started talking about Season 2,” she added.
As for when the series will return exactly, Holland didn’t have answers, but another surprise release appears out of the question, so you’ll have fair warning to clear hours of your schedule to allow for a suitably epic binge-watch.
“We haven’t discussed specific launch plans,” she commented, “but I doubt we’ll keep it a secret because that’s already been blown, basically. It exists.”

The OA Season 2 will start shooting in January
18th December 2017
Season 2 of The OA starts shooting in January 2018.
One of the most unexpected TV series of 2016, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s sci-fi fantasy drama defied definition and explanation, arriving out of nowhere on Netflix with eight hours of mind-boggling mystery and zero publicity.
The show begins with a young woman who reappears in her home town seven years after she went missing. Once blind but now able to see, her story moves effortlessly between genres, blending coming-of-age, prison break and mystical elements to form a continuously surprising and compellingly earnest ride.
“Halfway through the first episode, you’ll have to take a leap of faith to go with it. Spoiler alert: if you do, you won’t regret it,” we wrote in our review of the first episode.
A few months later, Netflix announced that it ordered another eight episodes. If you’ve been expecting a similarly unannounced drop of the second run, though, you’ll have to keep waiting: Season 2 is only just entering production.
Marling posted the news on Twitter this week, noting that it took tem “all summer and fall” to write the second season. Shooting with then begin in January 2018.
For now, meanwhile, there’s an intriguing glimpse of the episodes’ scripts in Marling’s picture, which includes the ominous title for Episode 1, “Angel of Death”.
The OA will return for Season 2
8th February 2017
Netflix has renewed The OA for a second season.
One of the most unexpected TV series of 2016, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s sci-fi fantasy drama defied definition and explanation, arriving out of nowhere in December with eight hours of mind-boggling mystery and zero publicity.
The show begins with a young woman who reappears in her home town seven years after she went missing. Once blind but now able to see, her story moves effortlessly between genres, blending coming-of-age, prison break and mystical elements to form a continuously surprising and compellingly earnest ride.

Alongside Marling, the show stars Emory Cohen (Brooklyn), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) and Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact), with Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Sarah Esberg from Plan B Entertainment and Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar all exec producing, alongside Marling and Batmanglij.
The pair have previously brought us The East and Sound of My Voice. Now, Netflix has announced that the duo will team up once more to continue the story of The OA – which, if you have watched to the end of Season 1, will appreciate that it’s anybody’s guess where the series will go from there.
Trailer: Netflix’s The OA to premiere on Friday 16th December
12th December 2016
Read our spoiler-free review of The OA’s first episode.
Last year, we brought you news of one of Netflix’s most intriguing original commissions yet: a series from Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, two fantastic indie talents who worked together on The East and the superb Sound of My Voice.
The series they’re working on is called The OA – and we finally have our first look at what it’s all about.
The eight chapter, mind-bending odyssey begins with a missing blind girl in her 20s, Prairie Johnson (Brit Marling), who comes home to the community she grew up in. The difference? She can now see. Some hail her a miracle, others a dangerous mystery, but Prairie won’t talk about her seven years missing with the FBI or her parents.
“I didn’t disappear,” she tells us in the trailer. “I was present for all of it.”
What is it, exactly? Therein lies the mystery, one that the trailer promises to be full of stunning visuals and, judging by their previous films, a combination of the supernatural, science and human drama. Marling stars in the series and Batmanglij directs all episodes – a promising combination that was enough to secure Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Sarah Esberg from Plan B (Oscar winning producers of 12 Years a Slave) and Michael Sugar from Anonymous Content (True Detective) as The OA’s exec producers, along with the duo.
They’ve also rounded themselves up a stellar ensemble cast, including Emory Cohen (Brooklyn, The Place Beyond the Pines), Jason Isaacs, Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact) and Scott Wilson (The Walking Dead).
The most exciting thing of all? It premieres this Friday. That’s 16th December, folks. Get ready.
Here’s the trailer:
