The Girlfriend Experience renewed for Season 3

The Girlfriend Experience has been renewed by STARZ for a third season.
A reimagining of Steven Soderbergh’s critically acclaimed 2009 movie of the same name, The Girlfriend Experience explores the relationships between exclusive escorts and their clients. Known as GFE’s, they are women who provide “The Girlfriend Experience” – emotional and sexual relationships at a very high price.
Exec-produced by Soderbergh, Season 1 of the show was snapped up exclusively by Amazon Prime Video in the UK last year, starring Riley Keough as Christine Reade. Season 2 broke the format by focusing on new characters and following two parallel storylines. One plot from the 14-episode series was set in Washington, D.C., and the other, in New Mexico. Each of the two parallel storylines was written, directed and executive produced by Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz.
After a two-year hiatus, STARZ has now picked up the programme for a third run, which will once again change location and characters.
Season 3 will be set in London and follow a young female neuroscientist, who begins to explore the transactional world of The Girlfriend Experience, only to find herself deep inside the Uncanny Valley with the relationships she creates.
Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Magic Mike, “The Knick”) and Fleishman return as executive producers with Jeff Cuban serving as executive producer. Written and directed by Anja Marquardt (She’s Lost Control) who also serves as co-executive producer, the 10-episode scripted anthology series is a Transactional Pictures of NY LP Production in Association with Populist Pictures and Magnolia Pictures.

The Girlfriend Experience will return to Amazon Prime Video this November for Season 2.

“The Girlfriend Experience isn’t about easy, plot-driven draws that encourage you to watch just one more episode,” we wrote in our review. “It is a slow burn character drama that, if shorter and released as a feature, could easily be a breakout indie hit of the year. Kerrigan and Seimetz have created an atmosphere with this show that is all-consuming… The Girlfriend Experience is a superbly written and exquisitely made series with one of the best performances of the year. A slow burn that sizzles and crackles into something quite remarkable.”
Season 2 will break with the format by focusing on new characters and following two parallel storylines. One plot from the 14-episode series will be set in Washington, D.C., and the other, in New Mexico. Each of the two parallel storylines is written, directed and executive produced by Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz.
Kerrigan’s storyline is set against the backdrop of the corrupting influence of dark money in the upcoming 2018 U.S. mid-term elections, where everything and everyone has a price. Anna Friel stars as Erica, a commanding and strong-willed finance director at a Republican super Political Action Committee. She meets Anna Garner (Louisa Krause), a confident and intelligent GFE provider at the top of the game. Erica enlists Anna’s help in her attempt to blackmail a high-powered money fundraiser in order to gain access to a secret donor network. After their initial exchange, Erica and Anna fall into a complicated sexual relationship, marked by an exploration of vulnerability, dominance and submission.
After being torn from her upscale lifestyle, Bria and her estranged step-daughter are relocated to New Mexico where they are overseen by a commanding US Marshal, Ian Olsen. Despite orders to stay low, Bria begins to revive her career as a sex worker. Bria’s moonlighting only becomes more complicated when it threatens to ensnare her new identity, her step-daughter, and the government official put in charge of her well-being.
Season 2 will be released weekly in pairs – one episode from each storyline – on Amazon Prime Video, starting from Monday 6th November, within 24 hours of the show’s premiere in the US on Starz.
