Watch: Anne with an E Season 3 trailer
David Farnor | On 20, Dec 2019
“Did you forget what you were going to say?” That’s the sound of Anne of Green Gables being lost for words in the new trailer for Anne with an E Season 3.
Netflix and CBC’s adaptation of the timeless Canadian novel tells the coming-of-age story of an outsider who, against all odds and numerous challenges, fights for acceptance, for her place in the world, and for love.
Season 3 was announced last year, with Netflix promising it would explore increasingly modern themes of identity, prejudice, feminism, bullying, gender parity, diversity and empowerment through the lens of its fierce, starry-eyed, irrepressible 16-year-old protagonist – played, of course, by Amybeth McNulty. Since then, Netflix has confirmed that Season 3 will, in fact, be the final season for Anne – a sadly premature cancellation, but perhaps a fitting send-off as the third run sees Anne turn 16 and try to work out who she is, as she forges her own origins story.
The third and final season of Anne with an E will premiere on 3rd January 2020. Here’s the trailer:
Anne with an E: Season 1 to 3 is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
Anne with an E to end with Season 3
26th November 2019
Anne with an E will return to Netflix in January, the streaming giant has confirmed – but it will be the last time it does so.
Netflix and CBC’s adaptation of the timeless Canadian novel Anne of Green Gables tells the coming-of-age story of an outsider who, against all odds and numerous challenges, fights for acceptance, for her place in the world, and for love.
“This is a tale that prefers to imagine than remember, and it’s all the better for it. As a result, there’s always a silver lining to every cloud, a live-life-with-no-regrets resilience that remains uniquely recognisable and undeniably heart-warming,” we wrote in our review of Season 1, available to catch up with on Netflix.
“We are thrilled to be able to announce a third season of Anne with an E before season two premieres in Canada,” said Sally Catto, General Manager, Programming, CBC, at the time. “Anne with an E delivered a rich first season, drawing in both new and existing fans to the world of Avonlea. We have no doubt that Canadians will continue to fall in love with this beautiful and heartwarming series for seasons to come.”
Now, though, Netflix has revealed that Season 3 will be its final run.
#renewannewithanE and #saveannewithanE have both trended on Twitter since the news was announced, as fans cried out for Netflix to reverse its cancellation.
Showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett told EW in a statement: “The fan support and love for Anne with an E is overwhelming, heartening, and wonderful — how I love these Kindred Spirits. This proves to me how much this show has connected with a diverse audience around the world and how meaningful it is to everyone. I am incredibly proud of these three seasons. Creating Anne with an E was an amazing experience — it was my heart project and I gave all of myself to it. I’m so grateful to my extraordinary cast, crew, writers, and directors for passionately bringing my vision to life.”
“I will miss this show forever and a day,” she added. “That being said, I’d love to write an AWAE finale feature film…”
“We’ve been thrilled to bring the quintessentially Canadian story of Anne with an E to viewers around the world,” the CBC and Netflix added in a joint statement. “We’re thankful to producers Moira Walley-Beckett and Miranda de Pencier and to the talented cast and crew for their incredible work in sharing Anne’s story with a new generation. We hope fans of the show love this final season as much as we do, and that it brings a satisfying conclusion to Anne’s journey.”
The third and final season of Anne with an E will premiere on 3rd January 2020.

Netflix renews Anne with an E for Season 3
16th August 2018
Anne with an E will return for a third season.
Netflix and CBC have renewed the award-winning adaptation of the timeless Canadian novel Anne of Green Gables. It will continue to tell the coming-of-age story of an outsider who, against all odds and numerous challenges, fights for acceptance, for her place in the world, and for love.
The renewal comes shortly after Netflix’s international debut of the second season in July , and just ahead of its Canadian debut on CBC in September.
“We are thrilled to be able to announce a third season of Anne with an E before season two premieres in Canada,” says Sally Catto, General Manager, Programming, CBC. “Anne with an E delivered a rich first season, drawing in both new and existing fans to the world of Avonlea. We have no doubt that Canadians will continue to fall in love with this beautiful and heartwarming series for seasons to come.”
“Through the storytelling of Anne with an E, the classic Canadian tale has transcended borders and found fans across our global membership,” adds Cindy Holland, VP of Original Content for Netflix. “We are excited to continue our partnership with CBC and Northwood and bring the series back for a third season.”
”Our beloved Anne will be 16 years old when we return to this season full of romantic complications, bold adventures and dramatic discoveries,” comments Moira Walley-Beckett, Showrunner. “I will explore important, contemporary themes that I hope will continue to resonate with, and inspire and uplift, our audience.”
The balance has worked well so far. Anne with an E received 13 Canadian Screen Award nominations in 2018 – the most of any series nominated – and was awarded Best Drama Series for Walley-Beckett and de Pencier. Walley-Beckett also won a Writer’s Guild of Canada award for writing and Showrunner of the Year at the Rockie Awards as part of the 2018 Banff World Media Festival.
While the series continues to honour the foundation of L. M. Montgomery’s novel, the third season will “creatively evolve”, says Netflix. Indeed, Season 3 will explore themes of identity, prejudice, feminism, bullying, gender parity, diversity and empowerment through the lens of its fierce, starry-eyed, irrepressible 16-year-old protagonist.
Executive producers Walley-Beckett (Breaking Bad) and de Pencier (Beginnerd) will team up once again for this third run, with production expected to begin this winter for launch in 2019.

Netflix releases new Anne of Green Gables trailer
5th April 2017
“It’s so easy to love Green Gables, isn’t it?” That’s Anne in the new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Anne of Green Gables.
But the road to our young heroine’s home is far from smooth, as the new teaser for the series shows the girl arrive at Green Gables – only to find a brother-sister pair, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, expecting a boy, not a girl.
Set in Prince Edward Island in the late 1890s, the show follows the orphan, who, after an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, is mistakenly sent to live with the Cuthberts. Over time, though, the 13-year-old Anne will transform the lives of Marilla (Geraldine James) and Matthew (R.H. Thomson) and, eventually, the entire small town in which they live with her unique spirit, fierce intellect and brilliant imagination.
It’s no easy task for Amybeth McNulty, who plays the eponymous redhead – but judging by this trailer, which gives us a glimpse of her fiery optimism and best friend Diana, she’s going to be a heroine who’s hard not to love.
Anne of Green Gables premieres on Netflix UK on 12th May. Here’s the new trailer:

Three more join Netflix’s Anne of Green Gables adaptation
23rd November
Netflix’s Anne of Green Gables has found its Diana, as three more people have joined the show’s cast.
The drama, based on Maud Montgomery’s classic novel, is a co-production between Netflix and Canadian broadcaster CBC. The basic story centres on a young orphaned girl in 1890, who, after an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, is mistakenly sent to live with an elderly spinster and her ageing brother. Over time, 13-year-old Anne will transform their lives and eventually the small town in which they live with her unique spirit, fierce intellect and brilliant imagination.
The production found its Annie only last month, with the casting of Irish-Canadian actress Amybeth McNulty. Now, her best friend Diana has also been cast: Canadian actor Dalila Bela, who has starred in Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Once Upon a Time, will take on the role. She is joined by Corinne Koslo as Rachel Lynde, Avonlea’s resident gossip, and Aymeric Jett Montaz, who will play Jerry Baynard, a hired farmhand whose role has been expanded upon from the novel.
The eight-episode programme will debut on Netflix in 2017, alongside its premiere on CBC in its home country. Deadline reports that it now has an official title: the much shorter “Anne”.
Netflix finds its Anne of Green Gables
23rd October 2016
Netflix has officially found its Anne of Green Gables.
Following a worldwide search, Amybeth McNulty has been cast as the lead in its eight-episode adaptation of Maud Montgomery’s classic novel.
Created by showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett, the co-production between Netflix and CBS will honour the foundation of the novel, but also chart new territory.
The Irish-Canadian actress was picked after almost 1,900 girls were seen by the producers of the show.
“Amybeth is a wonderful and sensitive actress who embodies all of Anne’s qualities. She’s soulful and inquisitive, mercurial and passionate. Her ability to convey pain and joy is breathtaking,” said showrunner Walley-Beckett in a statement. “Amybeth is Anne for a new generation.”
McNulty, who started acting at the age of six, she has already appeared in the feature film Morgan, Sky’s TV series Agatha Raisin and CBBC’s The Sparticle Mystery.
Also cast in the show are Geraldine James and R.H. Thomson. Production is currently underway on the project in Ontario, following early filming in Prince Edward Island.
Netflix is bringing Anne of Green Gables to the screen
23rd August 2016
Netflix is bringing Anne of Green Gables to the screen in a TV series.
The streaming giant is joining forces with CBC for the eight-episode drama, which was greenly by the US broadcaster earlier this year.
Based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel and created by showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett, Anne will stream globally on Netflix and be broadcast in Canada on CBC in 2017.
Anne is a coming-of-age story about an outsider who, against all odds and numerous challenges, fights for acceptance for her place in the world and for love. The series centres on a young orphaned girl in 1890, who, after an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, is mistakenly sent to live with an elderly spinster and her ageing brother. Over time, 13-year-old Anne will transform their lives and eventually the small town in which they live with her unique spirit, fierce intellect and brilliant imagination.
While the new series will honor the foundation of the novel held as a Canadian treasure and global phenomenon, Anne will also chart new territory. Anne and the rest of the characters will experience adventures reflecting timeless issues including themes of identity, sexism, bullying, prejudice, and trusting one’s self.
Award-winning director Niki Caro (Whale Rider) has signed on to direct the two-hour premiere episode. Caro teams up with three-time Emmy Award and Breaking Bad’s Walley-Beckett, who is writing the entire first season of the series, which is produced by Miranda de Pencier (Beginners, Thanks For Sharing) under her Northwood Entertainment banner.
“This all-female powerhouse trio undoubtedly makes ANNE one of this year’s most anticipated television series,” says Netflix. Production is scheduled to begin this September in Ontario, Canada.
“Anne Shirley is one of Canada’s greatest gifts to the world, known and loved internationally, so we’re thrilled to be working with the CBC and Northwood to bring this charismatic character to both new and old fans around the world,” comments Elizabeth Bradley, Netflix vice president of content.
“Moira Walley-Beckett has written eight riveting, funny, emotional, surprising, beautiful hours of television. With the extraordinary talent of Niki Caro at the helm, we can’t wait to deliver our show to Netflix, CBC and the world,” adds Miranda de Pencier. “Netflix as our global partner means ANNE’s indomitable spirit can now enter homes and hearts all over the world.”
Walley-Beckett and de Pencier developed and will executive produce the series. Alison Owen (Saving Mr. Banks) and Debra Hayward (Bridget Jones Diary, Les Miserables) are also attached to executive produce and Susan Murdoch will produce.
