Jon Spaihts to write Gears of War film for Netflix

Jon Spaihts will officially write Netflix’s live-action Gears of War film.
With over 40 million copies sold, Gears of War is one of gaming’s biggest sagas. A society divided and on the brink of collapse faces total extinction by the Locust, a monstrous threat from below. Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is now charged with leading humanity’s last stand.
Last November Netflix announced a partnership with The Coalition to adapt the Gears of War universe. Netflix will first adapt the video game saga into a live-action feature, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow.
Now, Jon Spaihts – who has previously penned Dune 1 and 2 and Doctor Strange – has boarded the live-action film.
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” he says. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
The Coalition adds: “We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life. Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic science fiction universes and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honour our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
Netflix announces Gears of War film and animated series
9th November 2022
Netflix is officially bringing Gears of War to the screen.
The hit video game franchise, which helped put the Xbox on the map, debuted 16 years ago this week and has gone on to spawn a string of sequels and spin-offs. It’s perhaps no surprise then that a movie has been in the works for some time, with New Line and Universal both at one point trying to line up a big screen adaptation.
Now, Netflix has officially confirmed that it’s making a Gears of War film a reality, with a live-action feature in the pipeline. That will be followed by an adult animated series, with – Netflix says – “potential for more stories to follow”.
The tactical third-person and co-operative shooter video games are set in a society divided and on the brink of collapse, with humanity facing total extinction by the Locust, a monstrous threat from below. It follows Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, which is charged with leading humanity’s last stand.
