Narcos’ Wagner Moura to play Brazilian diplomat in Netflix biopic
28th July 2018
Narcos star Wagner Moura is reteaming with Netflix for his next big role: a Brazilian UN diplomat in a heavyweight biopic.
The untitled film tells the true story of Sergio Vieira de Mello (Wagner Moura). Some thought of him as a “crisis junkie” who relished the chance to drop into the most intractable situations on the planet, while others considered him a diplomatic superhero whose charm, negotiation skills and good looks enabled him to save countless lives. Sergio rose through the ranks to become the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Before he was tragically killed in a terrorist bombing in 2003, de Mello was widely considered to be the next UN Secretary General. As the world watches the dramatic efforts to save de Mello’s life in the hours after an attack in Baghdad ordered by Osama bin Laden, he is forced to confront the dubious choices he has made during his personal life and career as the UN’s “go-to man” for the hottest of hotspots in the world.
The movie is adapted from Pulitzer Prize-winner Samantha Power’s groundbreaking biography, Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World. Academy Award nominee Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club) is writing the script, while Emmy Award winner Greg Barker (The Final Year, Manhunt: The Inside Story of the Hunt for Bin Laden) is at the helm. Barker previously produced and directed the documentary Sergio, which was an award winner at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Now, he’s making his narrative feature debut with Netflix’s biopic.
The project is produced by Brent Travers for Black Rabbit Media, Daniel Dreifuss (No) for Anima Pictures and Moura Under his Itapoan banner. Moura will be joined in front of the camera by Ana De Armas (Blade Runner 2049), Garret Dillahunt (Widows), Will Dalton (Loving), Clemens Schick (Casino Royale), and Brían F. O’Byrne (Little Boy Blue, Mildred Pierce, Million Dollar Baby).
Filming begins in August and Netflix will release the film globally in 2019.
