RRR released on Netflix in UK

The hit Indian blockbuster RRR has been released in the UK on Netflix – but with a slight catch: the film isn’t streaming in its original language.
Directed by SS Rajamouli and starring NT Rama Rao Jr and Ram Charan, the film follows two revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, and is set against the backdrop of pre-independent India. Telling a fictional story, it sees the two men meet and become friends, one a fearless warrior on a perilous mission and one a steely police officer.
RRR, which stands for Rise, Roar, Revolt, was originally set to be released in cinemas way back in 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic let to multiple delays. Earlier this year, though, it finally made it to the big screen in India, breaking box office records.
Now, the three-hour action epic has made it to UK living rooms, thanks to a deal inked with Netflix in May 2021. But Netflix’s deal comes with a caveat: the film is only available to stream dubbed into Hindi, not the original film’s language of Telugu. (In cinemas, it was released in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada language versions.)
Netflix, which brought its release of the film forward from June to this weekend, is streaming the Hindi-language version with subtitles in English, Spanish, Arabic, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
The reason Netflix brought its release date forward, though, is because another streamer is also in the game: the VOD platform ZEE5, which also acquired the rights to RRR last year.
ZEE5, an Indian subscription streaming service that spans both films and TV, is streaming RRR worldwide in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Kannada languages.
To watch it on ZEE5, you’ll need to sign up to a subscription of £29.99 a year or £14.99 for 3 months.
