Transparent takes home first Emmys for Amazon

Transparent has taken home the first ever Emmy Awards for Amazon.
The online retailer has been in fierce competition with Netflix in recent years, as both streaming services seek to produce their own original content.
Netflix has enjoyed astounding success, picking up nominations immediately for House of Cards and, shortly after, Orange Is the New Black. In 2013, the company was nominated for 14 Emmys. This year, it was in competition for 34, beaten only by HBO (126), ABC (42), FX (38) and FOX (35).
Amazon Studios, though, has accelerated significantly in the past 12 months, with its original show Transparent becoming the first ever web series to win a Golden Globe for Best Series. Neither VOD giant repeated the same feat at last night’s 2015 Emmys, but both nabbed their fair share of the gongs, cementing the pair as the only streaming services to be nominated for – and win – at the Emmys.
Amazon, which received 12 nods overall, took home three prizes, including Outstanding Director of a Comedy Series for Jill Soloway, Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series for The West Wing’s Bradley Whitford, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeffrey Tambor.
The total places Amazon ahead of Netflix in this year’s Emmy race, with the rival company winning two awards, including Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series for Uzo Aduba in Orange Is the New Black and Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series for Reg E. Cathey, who plays Freddy Hayes in House of Cards.
The Outstanding Series gongs instead went to more familiar contenders, as HBO dominated the ceremony: Game of Thrones took home Outstanding Drama, Veep took home Outstanding Comedy and even Olive Kitteridge took home Oustanding Limited Series. Netflix and Amazon may not be quite at the big Emmy win stage yet, but with HBO’s victors already enjoying several seasons under the belts (like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, there were dues to pay to veterans ducking out of the ring), it’s only a matter of time until they become old hands themselves.
