Tatiana Maslany cast as Marvel’s She-Hulk
18th September 2020
Tatiana Maslany will play She-Hulk in Marvel’s new Disney+ series.
Deadline reports the Orphan Black star will take the title role in She-Hulk’s solo small-screen outing, which will shine a spotlight on the last major character to be co-created Stan Lee.
She-Hulk, who has been rumoured to make her screen debut for some time, is a lawyer in day-to-day life called Jennifer Walters. A cousin of Bruce Banner in the comics, she is Gamma-transformed into a similar green machine, but balances that strength with her super wit and confidence, fighting superheroic law cases in the courts.
This week, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Dead to Me helmer Kat Coiro boarded the project as director, joining Ricky and Morty veteran Jessica Gao, who will write the series. Now, they’ve got a leading lady to work with, fresh from her role in HBO’s revival of Perry Mason, opposite Matthew Rhys.
Marvel hasn’t officially announced the news, but Mark Ruffalo tweeted a welcome to Tatiana last night, which we’re taking as an official confirmation.
There is no further word on casting or targeted production dates, but Marvel is looking to move forwards with its planned expansion of the MCU after the coronavirus pandemic halted productions earlier this year. By the end of 2020, the comics giant recently revealed, it will release WandaVision, its first superhero series for Disney+.
It’s Always Sunny’s Kat Coiro to direct Disney+ series She-Hulk
17th September 2020
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia director Kat Coiro will helm She-Hulk’s Disney+ series.
She-Hulk, who has been rumoured to make a screen debut for some time, is a lawyer in day-to-day life called Jennifer Walters. A cousin of Bruce Banner in the comics, she is Gamma-transformed into a similar green machine, but balances that strength with her super wit and confidence, fighting superheroic law cases in the courts.
The show is one of a wave of Marvel projects in the works for Disney’s subscription streaming service. While the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted Disney’s pipeline plans, WandaVision has been confirmed for arriving on Disney+ this year, while production is about to resume on Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Disney, meanwhile, is still looking to the future, with Coiro in talks to direct the pilot for She-Hulk as well as several other episodes.
Coiro would also serve as an exec-producer on the show, which is written by Rick and Morty veteran Jessica Gao.
Coiro is no stranger to streaming, having worked on Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle and Netflix’s Dead to Me. With her next film – Marry Me, set for a Valentine’s Day release with a cast that includes Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Sarah Silverman – her attachment to the She-Hulk series gives an indicator of the kind of witty, comedic tone to expect.
Jessica Gao to write She-Hulk for Disney+
12th November 2019
Rick and Morty veteran Jessica Gao is about to get schwifty with Disney+, as she takes charge of penning new series She-Hulk.
The signing of Gao, whose CV also includes Silicon Valley, cements Disney’s commitment to moving the show forwards, after the project was announced at Disney’s D23 Expo earlier this year.
Also taking a step forwards is Moon Knight, announced at D23 as well, with Jeremy Slater boarding the show as head writer. Slater, who also penned 2015’s Fantastic Four, is no stranger to the small screen, adapting The Exorcist for two seasons and the manga Death Note for Netflix.
The characters’ addition to the Disney+ slate marks Marvel’s plans to continue expanding its universe on the small screen, with a host of existing secondary players – including Loki and The Winter Soldier – getting their own solo series.
Marvel boss Kevin Feige, however, is also thinking big, with both characters set to cross over to the MCU movies eventually
“It’s specifically the plan that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be in theaters and will be on Disney+… All of those characters [in Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision] will undergo transformative, I hope, very exciting experiences in that show and then go into our movies. So they’ll go back and forth. Some characters, like we’ve announced She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight, you will meet for the first time in a Disney+ show, and then they will go into the movies.”
Moon Knight and She-Hulk series confirmed for Disney+
24th August 2019
Moon Knight and She-Hulk are getting their own Disney+ series.
Disney’s upcoming subscription streaming service is out in full force this week, as the Disney 13 Expo unveils new trailers and casting news for its original shows, including Star Wars’ The Mandalorian. While the MCU continues to be a major building block for Disney+, with existing secondary characters getting their own solo outings, the House of Mouse is evidently also looking to launch lesser known heroes on the small screen, with two character series announced today: Moon Knight and She-Hulk.
The story centres on former boxer and US marine Marc Spector, who finds himself offered up to an ancient god after a mission in Egypt went wrong and left him for dead. Given a second life, he struggles with multiple personalities and amoral inclinations to fight on against all odds as the cloaked avenger Moon Knight.
She-Hulk, who has been rumoured to make a screen debut for some time, is a lawyer in day-to-day life called Jennifer Walters. A cousin of Bruce Banner in the comics, she is Gamma-transformed into a similar green machine, but balances that strength with her super wit and confidence, fighting superheroic law cases in the courts – think Banner at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
