Miss Americana: Netflix Taylor Swift documentary to open Sundance 2020
5th December 2019
Miss Americana, Netflix’s Taylor Swift documentary, will open the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
Sundance has increasingly become a platform for streaming services, as they both acquire indie films as originals and exclusives and showcase their latest productions. In 2020, Sundance will go so far as to use Netflix to open its line-up, with Lana Wilson’s documentary about Netflix to kick off the Utah event.
Described as a “raw and emotionally revealing look at one of the most iconic artists of our time”, it promises to give a glimpse into a “transformational period in her life as she learns to embrace her role not only as a songwriter and performer, but as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice”.
Oscar winners Morgan Neville (Won’t You Be My Neighbor?) and Caitrin Rogers (20 Feet From Stardom, The Music of Strangers), as well as Christine O’Malley (Wordplay, I.O.U.S.A.), served as producers, with Tremolo the production company.
The film raises questions about how or whether the film will feature any of Swift’s older music, with Big Machine Label Group refusing to let her perform the catalogue of songs they still hold the rights to until she is allowed to re-record them in non-copycat versions next year.
It also marks Swift’s ongoing relationship with Netflix, after the pop phenomenon made her latest concert, Reputation Stadium Tour, available on Netflix on New Year’s Eve last year. The concert film, which is still available to stream, features pyro, fireworks, multiple stages and, of course, a 63 foot cobra named Karyn.
Taylor Swift: Miss Americana will premiere at Sundance on 23rd January 2020. There is no confirmation yet when the film will arrive on Netflix.
