David Farnor | On 05, Sep 2019
“There are things beyond your understanding you are destined for.”
That’s the sound of Disenchantment stepping up its scale as it returns for a second run.
Matt Groening’s animated comedy fantasy series is set in the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where we follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young Princess Bean, her feisty elf companion, Elfo, and her personal demon, Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.
The series features the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson (Bean), Eric Andre (Luci) and Nat Faxon (Elfo) along with John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery.
Part 2 of Season 1, meanwhile, picks up as Elfo is gone, Dreamland is deserted and Princess Bean is on a mission. Netflix has already ordered more episodes of the show, with a second season of 20 more episodes (again split into two parts) to premiere in 2020 and 2021.
Part 2 will premiere on 20th September. Here’s the trailer:

Netflix renews Disenchantment for Season 2
22nd October 2018
Netflix has renewed Matt Groening’s Disenchantment for a second season.
The animated series, from the man who created The Simpsons, swaps Springfield for the medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where we follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion, Elfo, and her personal demon, Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.
Josh Weinstein is showrunner of the series, which features the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson (Bean), Nat Faxon (Elfo) and Eric Andre (Luci), along with John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery. It was met with a broadly positive reception when its first 10 episodes premiered on the streaming service earlier this year.
“Disenchantment needs time to develop into something truly special,” we wrote in our review. “Many of the best TV comedies take a while to create affection for the wider cast of characters. The Simpsons wasn’t just funny because Homer’s a drunken idiot, it was hilarious because it created a world full of memorable secondary characters. Groening’s latest is hit and miss, but it’s amusing enough to keep you watching and promises something far greater down the line. It has all the right ingredients for something magical.”
Netflix evidently agrees: it has since signed an overall deal with Disenchantment’s staff writer Shion Takeuchi. And, while the show is already set to return for a further 10 episodes (each season consists of 20) in 2019, it has now officially ordered another 20 instalments, which will premiere on Netflix in 2020 and 2021.

Netflix drops full Disenchantment trailer
22nd July 2018
Netflix has dropped the full trailer for Disenchantment, Matt Groening’s new animated series.
The adult comedy, written by the man behind The Simpsons, is set in the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where we follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion, Elfo, and her personal demon, Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.

Andre and Faxon were both on hand with Groening and showrunner Josh Weinstein at a Comic-Con panel yesterday to talk about the show, with familiar voices from Futurama also turning up (DiMaggio, West, LaMarche, MacNeille and Herman) to mark a mini-Groening reunion.
“This show is basically us trying to see if we can create a new universe and play with it,” he said of the show, while Weinstein noted that the series is also their first time attempting to tell a serialised story, with Easter eggs hidden in each episode piecing together an over-arching mystery leading to the show’s ending.
All 10 episodes of Disenchantment land on Netflix on Friday 17th August. Here’s the full video:

First look and release date: Matt Groening’s Netflix series Disenchantment
24th May 2018
A princess, an elf, and a demon walk into a bar. If that isn’t enough to get your curiosity, Matt Groening is about to get your attention with this first look at his new Netflix series, Disenchantment.
The animated comedy will whisk viewers away to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion, Elfo, and her personal demon, Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.
Produced by The ULULU Company for Netflix, the series will feature the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson (“Bean”), Nat Faxon (“Elfo”) and Eric Andre (“Luci”), along with familiar names such as Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, Matt Berry and Lucy Montgomery, plus Groening veterans John DiMaggio and Billy West.
The series was first announced last summer, with little more known about the project, except that it would be about “life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots” – and that Netflix had ordered two seasons, with 10 episodes in each group. Now, after a cryptic tweet giving us a very tiny glimpse of the show’s characters, Netflix has officially released several new images giving us a proper first look at Groening’s return to the screen.
The show’s makers have also confirmed its release date, with the first 10 episodes set to premiere on Netflix worldwide on 17th August. Here are the pictures:
Disenchantment: Netflix orders adult animation from Matt Groening
25th July 2017
Matt Groening is headed to Netflix. The legendary creator of The Simpsons was rumoured to be in talks with the streaming giant as far back as 2016, but now, the partnership is officially happening: they will be teaming up to create a new adult series, called Disenchantment.
“Ultimately,” says Matt Groening, “Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”
The series will feature the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson (“Bean”), Nat Faxon (“Elfo”) and Eric Andre (“Luci”), along with familiar names such as Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, Matt Berry and Lucy Montgomery, plus Groening veterans John DiMaggio and Billy West. A Futurama reunion is also on the cards in the visual stakes: the animation is being done by Rough Draft Studios, who also animated Groening’s sci-fi show.
It is produced by The ULULU Company for Netflix, with Matt Groening and Josh Weinstein (The Simpsons, Futurama) serving as executive producers.
“Matt Groening’s brilliant work has resonated with generations around the world and we couldn’t be happier to work with him on Disenchantment,” says Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix. “The series will bear his trademark animation style and biting wit, and we think it’s a perfect fit for our many Netflix animation fans.”
Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of Disenchantment, which will premiere in two groups of 10 episodes, starting in 2018.
Matt Groening to make an animated series for Netflix?
16th January 2016
Matt Groening may return to our television screens with a new Netflix series.
According to Variety, the creator of The Simpsons is in talks with the streaming giant to develop a show. Netflix has not commented on the report, but Variety reports that the order for the show would extend to two seasons, each spanning 10 episodes, because of the time required to produce the animation and to allow Netflix to write off the costs. Whether another production company would be involved has not been confirmed.
Groening, who has been less active than he once was following the wrap of Futurama in 2013, would be a natural fit for Netflix, though, as the company increasingly seeks to commission work from established comedy talent, such as Ricky Gervais, Judd Apatow, Tina Fey, Chelsea Handler and Mitch Hurwitz. The Simpsons, which began all the way back in 1989, is one of the TV’s longest-running entertainment shows, with Groening a legend in his own right. With rival Amazon signing Woody Allen for an original TV series, Groening would be a feather in the VOD giant’s cap.
Netflix is also making an apparent effort to build its library of adult animated series, which balances out its expanding roster of animated kids’ series. The streaming site’s collection currently ranges from BoJack Horseman and Archer to, most recently, Bill Burr’s F is for Family.
