BBC in talks over Gentleman Jack Season 3 after HBO cancellation
David Farnor | On 09, Jul 2022
Gentleman Jack has been cancelled by HBO after two seasons.
Sally Wainwright’s hit drama, a co-production between HBO and the BBC, stars Suranne Jones as Anne Lister, alongside Sophie Rundle as Ann Walker. Based on the real life diaries of Anne Lister, part of which were written in code, it follows Anne’s mission to marry a seriously wealthy woman. In West Yorkshire. In 1832.
A love story set in the complex, changing world of Halifax – the cradle of the industrial revolution – it finds Anne returning to the town and determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home Shibden Hall. Season 2, which just finished its run, sees Anne Lister and Ann Walker as they set up home together at Shibden Hall, trying to combine their estates and become a power couple. Anne’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, Anne’s refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous.
“Suranne Jones is electric in this whip-smart, playful period drama that swaggers through its true story with style,” we wrote in our review.
Now, however, HBO has said that it will not renew the programme for a third season.
“When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers,” said the network in a statement. “We are incredibly grateful to Sally, to the impeccable Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, and to the entire cast and crew for bringing Anne and Ann’s story to life. We’d also like to thank our partners at BBC and Lookout Point for their collaboration on two remarkable seasons.”
However, the series is a co-production, which means that there is still hope for the BBC to continue the show without its US partner.
The Beeb has said in a statement: “We are tremendously proud of Gentleman Jack, a show which has made a huge cultural impact, and we are in discussions with Sally about what’s next.”
