Harlock: Space Pirate is coming soon to Netflix UK.
The anime will be released on Netflix in all the company’s territories on 1st August 2014, reports IGN.
The movie, based on Space Pirate Captain Harlock by Leiji Matsumoto, updates the manga’s character from its original publications – dating back decades – to take place in the modern day.
It follows the story of Harlock, a fighter for freedom in a time when humanity has reached the end of the galaxy. The former captain of one of four battleships designed for the war to reclaim Earth, the space pirate disappeared and rebelled against authorities.
Directed by Shinji Aramaki, the 3D CG manga cost upwards of 30 million dollars to make and was shown out of competition at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
The film has been hailed as “mythic, epic and visually unprecedented” by Avatar director James Cameron, who said it will “take you to a whole new universe of ideas”.
The movie was nominated for Japan Academy Animation of the Year in 2013. Harlock: Space Pirate will be released on Netflix UK on 1st August 2014 – a much-needed addition to its notably limited line-up of anime, which currently only includes 19 titles.
