FilmDoo has added two new films this week from Israel and the Czech Republic.
Next to Her, directed by Asaf Korman, follows the struggle of Chelli (Ben-Shlush) to look after her sister, Gabby (Ivgy), who has a mental disability. It’s a loving relationship, as Chelli devotes her entire life to caring for Gabby, but not necessarily a healthy one; Next to Her gradually peels away the layers of domestic duties to explore just how intense the siblings’ bond is.
Based on lead actress Liron Ben-Shlush’s own experiences of caring for her sister, Next to Her is a stark, moving and naturalistic portrayal of how family ties can both bind and unravel us.
“An excellent, provocative study of domestic dependency,” we wrote in our review, which you can read in full here.
Journey to Rome is a surreal, spiritual Czech comedy road movie.
The directorial debut of Tomasz Mielnik, it follows Vasek, a timid guard at a gallery, who becomes a reluctant thief after learning that he’s dying. And so he heads on a train with a piece of art to sell, and slowly gets lost in a colourful chaos of other people’s destinies, opinions and his own dreams.
