Disney has ordered a new live-action series based on The Spiderwick Chronicles.
The books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black were first published in 2003, going on to span 8 novels, concluding in 2009. They were adapted into a feature film back in 2008 by Nickelodeon Movies, with a video game also released alongside it.
Now, the books are coming back to the screen, with Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, one of the Disney Television Studios, officially giving the green light to a live-action adaptation. A modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure, the series will follow the Grace Family — twin brothers Jared and Simon, their sister, Mallory, and mother, Helen — as they move into their dilapidated ancestral home. They begin to unravel a dark mystery about their great-great uncle, who once discovered the secret and sometimes dangerous faerie world.
Aron Eli Coleite, who developed Locke & Key for Netflix, created 2019 series Daybreak and has been a writer and producer on Star Trek: Discovery, will serve as showrunner.
It joins a number of Disney+ original series aimed at young adult and family audiences, including The Mysterious Benedict Society, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
