Jon Bernthal will return as The Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again.
The Disney+ series, produced by Marvel Studios, will see Hell’s Kitchen’s favourite crime-fighting lawyer officially return to living rooms, several years after Netflix cancelled its Daredevil series after three seasons.
Cox will officially be back for the new 18-episode series, along with Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin. But they won’t be the only returning faces, with THR reporting this week that Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle, who appeared in Netflix’s Daredevil and then went on to have his own spin-off Netflix series.
Also revealed this week is that another character will be back: Vanessa Fisk, the wife of Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin. However, she’ll be played by someone else, with Sandrine Holt taking on the role after Ayelet Zurer played her in the Netflix series. Holt, who was previously announced in the casting line-up without knowing her character, will be familiar to audiences from American Gigolo, Better Call Saul and Homeland.
Other previously announced cast members who roles are still unknown include Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva and Michael Gaston. Meanwhile, there is still no word on whether Karen Page or Foggy Nelson will return from the Netflix series, whether played by Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson or by other actors. At the same time, the return of Bernthal has sparked hopes and speculation from fans that other members of the Defenders Netflix universe could also make the jump to the MCU, such as Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones and Mike Colter’s Luke Cage.
Behind the camera, things are more concrete, with Dexter helmer Michael Cuesta set to direct the first episode. The 18-episode series is written and exec-produced by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, with production beginning this month in New York.
Daredevil: Born Again “won’t be as gory” as Netflix series
23rd December 2022
Daredevil: Born Again, perhaps unsurprisingly, isn’t likely to be as gory as the character’s Netflix series, star Charlie Cox has said.
The Disney+ series, produced by Marvel Studios, will see Hell’s Kitchen’s favourite crime-fighting lawyer officially return to living rooms, almost five years after Netflix cancelled its Daredevil series after three seasons. Cox will officially be back for the new 18-episode series, along with Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin.
It’s not the first time we’ve seen Cox in the Daredevil suit in the past few years, though, with several cameos in Marvel movies – making him (and D’Onofrio) the only characters to make the jump from Netflix’s Marvel universe to the official MCU. That included an episode of She-Hulk, which presented lawyer Matt Murdock in a more upbeat light than his brooding Netflix debut. Now, Cox has spoken a bit more about the new incarnation of the character.
“My opinion is this character works best when he’s geared towards a slightly more mature audience. My instinct is that on Disney+ it will be dark but it probably won’t be as gory,” he told NME in an interview, noting that She-Hulk showed Daredevil as “quick-witted and funny and charismatic and carefree at times”.
For fans of the Netflix show hoping for more of the same, Cox said: “I would say to those people, we’ve done that. Let’s take the things that really worked, but can we broaden? Can we appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works?”
Cox is staying tight-lipped about more details about the 18-episode series.
“I’m fascinated to discover why they’ve chosen to do 18,” he commented. “I’m imagining there’s going to be an element to it that is like the old-school procedural show. Not necessarily case-of-the-week, but something where we go really deep into Matt Murdock the lawyer and get to see what his life is like. If that’s done right and he really gets his hands dirty with that world… I think there’s something quite interesting about that, to spend a lot of time in a superhero’s day-to-day life and you really earn the moments when he suits up.”
Cox will certainly be spending a lot of time in that world, with the show filming from February to December next year.
“They said to me, ‘We’re going to be shooting in 2023.’ I said, ‘Great, when?’ They said, ‘All 2023.’”
Daredevil: Born Again: Michael Gandolfini leads trio of cast additions
6th December 2022
Michael Gandolfini is one of three new additions to the cast of Daredevil: Born Again, reports Deadline.
Joining them will be Michael Gandolfini, who played Tony Soprano in the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark. Also signing on for the show are reportedly Margarita Levieva and Sandrine Holt.
Levieva, who will soon be seen in Star Wars series The Acolyte and ITV’s Litvinenko, also starred in HBO’s The Deuce, while Holt has appeared in American Gigolo, Better Call Saul and The Expanse.
Details about their characters are being kept under wraps, but there are rumours that Levieva and Holt will playing love interests for the two returning lead characters. Meanwhile, fans of the Netflix series continue to speculate about whether Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson will return to reprise their roles of Karen Page and Foggy Nelson from the Netflix series.
The 18-episode series is written and exec-produced by Matt Corman and Chris Ord.
Daredevil: Born Again gets new logo and start date
11th September 2022
Daredevil: Born Again was present at the D23 Expo this weekend and, while no new details were officially revealed at the event, stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio did confirm that filming will begin in the new year.
The Disney+ series, produced by Marvel Studios, was announced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige at San Diego Comic-Con. It will see Hell’s Kitchen’s favourite crime-fighting lawyer officially return to living rooms, almost five years after Netflix cancelled its Daredevil series after three seasons.
Cox will officially be back for the new 18-episode series, along with Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, with both continuing to reprise their roles in other Marvel projects, including an appearance by Cox in She Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Matt Corman and Chris Ord – who co-created Covert Affairs and served as co-showrunners on The Enemy Within, The Brave and Containment- have been reportedly hired to write and exec-produce the project.
Otherwise, in a sign that the new season will be something of a fresh start for the show and characters, rather than a continuation from Netflix’s incarnation, Marvel has unveiled a new logo for the programme:
Born Again: Daredevil officially returns in Disney+ series
24th July 2022
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil will official return to our screens in new series Daredevil: Born Again.
The Disney+ show, produced by Marvel Studios, was announced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige during the comic giant’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. Outlining Marvel’s plans for the next phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which now firmly includes Disney+ series, he officially made good on the recent reports that a Daredevil reunion was in the works. Hell’s Kitchen’s favourite crime-fighting lawyer will officially return to living rooms, almost five years after Netflix cancelled its Daredevil series after three seasons.
The original Daredevil series was part of a wave of Marvel projects all getting the chop at Netflix, with the two giants parting ways as Marvel-owning Disney prepared to launch its own streaming service. Marvel at the time teased that it looked “forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future”, with fans hoping that would mean a revival of the programme when Daredevil officially jumped from Netflix to Disney+, along with the other series in the Marvel/Netflix partnership, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and crossover series The Defenders.
Cox will officially be back for the new 18-episode series, along with Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, after he has reprised his role as the villain in other Marvel projects.
Matt Corman and Chris Ord – who co-created Covert Affairs and served as co-showrunners on The Enemy Within, The Brave and Containment- have been reportedly hired to write and exec-produce the project.
As for whether Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll will return as Daredevil’s friends, Foggy and Karen, we’ll have to wait and see. But what we do know for sure is that Daredevil: Born Again is definitely happening, and that it will debut on Disney+ in spring 2024.
Daredevil series in the works at Disney+
19th May 2022
A new Daredevil series is reportedly in the works at Disney+.
Hopes that Hell’s Kitchen’s favourite crime-fighting lawyer might make a return to our screens have been high ever since Netflix cancelled its Daredevil series after three seasons back in 2018. At the time, it was part of a wave of Marvel projects all getting the chop at Netflix, with the two giants parting ways as Marvel-owning Disney prepared to launch its own streaming service.
At the time, Marvel said it looked “forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future”, although gave no more details. Then, in March this year, the Marvel series officially jumped from Netflix to Disney+ – including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and crossover series The Defenders.
Their arrival on the streaming platform followed appearances by Vincent D’Onofrio – who played Kingpin in Daredevil – and Charlie Cox, who played Daredevil, in other Marvel projects, officially cementing the show’s cast as the current canon, as far as the MCU goes.
Now, it seems that The Man Without Fear is getting a more substantial screen outing once again, with Variety reporting that Matt Corman and Chris Ord have been hired to write and exec-produce the project.
Marvel doesn’t comment on projects in development, but the recruitment of Corman and Ord – who co-created Covert Affairs and served as co-showrunners on The Enemy Within, The Brave and Containment – is a sign that things are gathering momentum.
“Not content with simply being complex by Marvel’s standards, Daredevil has spun a web of intrigue that would put most other dramas to shame,” we wrote in our review of Season 1 of Daredevil. (You can read our full reviews of Daredevil here.)
