Conclave, Emilia Pérez lead 2025 BAFTA nominations
David Farnor | On 15, Jan 2025
Conclave and Emilia Pérez are leading the nominees for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards.
Conclave has the most nominations, with 12 to its name – including Best Film and Best Director for Edward Berger – while Netflix’s Emilia Pérez has 11 nods – including Best Director for Jacques Audiard and Best Film, as well as Film Not in the English Language.
Close behind those two are The Brutalist, with nine nominations, and Anora, Dune: Part Two and Wicked, all of which have seven nominations apiece. A Complete Unknown and Kneecap are both on six nominations, while Nosferatu and The Substance have five nods each.
14 out of the 24 nominees in the performance categories have received their first BAFTA Film nomination, including Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Ariana Grande (Wicked), Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez), Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice).
In the Best Director category, three of the six are first-time Director nominees and nominees for Original Screenplay: Sean Baker (Anora) – who has the most nominations this year, with five – Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance).
Other notable contenders include The Apprentice, Blitz, Gladiator II, Sing Sing, Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and The Wild Robot, which all have three nominations.
The nominees for the EE Rising Star Award are Marisa Abela, Jharrel Jerome, David Jonsson, Mikey Madison, and Nabhaan Rizwan. It is the only award voted for by the British public and it is presented annually to a performer who has demonstrated exceptional talent early in their careers.
Apple has 3 nominations to its name, courtesy of Blitz, while MUBI has six nominations to its name, courtesy of Bird and The Substance. Amazon MGM Studios has one, courtesy of Nickel Boys. Netflix, however, is leading the streamer race, with a total of 16 nominations – including Wallace and Gromit, Will & Harper and Daughters.
Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, said: “The 42 films nominated today span a fantastically broad spectrum of genres with enormous breadth in creative expression; from the most intimate character pieces to epic societal commentaries via genre-bending dramas, musicals and comedies. The film industry has delivered in spades once again. We look forward to acknowledging this amazing body of work at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards. With just over a month to go, we encourage film fans everywhere to watch as many films as possible – there really is something for everyone.”
The winners will be announced on Sunday 16th February, with the ceremony as usual on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
