“We won´t talk about this again…”
It’s New Year’s Eve, 1929, and while most of Spain is optimistically looking forward to a bright future year, a group of women are looking back at a past mistake and wondering how an earth they solve it.
That’s the dramatic opening to Season 2 of Netflix’s Cable Girls, which returns this Christmas. The show, which first premiered in April, takes us back to Madrid, 1928, when the national telephone company opened its headquarters in the city centre, drawing hundreds of girls to apply for a job as a “cable girl” in the only place that represented progress and modernity for women at the time. It follows Lidia (Blanca Suárez, El barco, El internado), Marga (Nadia de Santiago, Musarañas, Amar es para siempre), Carlota (Ana Fernández, Los protegidos) and Ángeles (Maggie Civantos, Vis a vis), as they try to find their way through sexism, betrayal and competition to make friends and a new future for themselves.
The result was so promising that Netflix renewed it for a second season before the first had ever premiered. “A light, frothy series that wears its broad feminist message with all the style you’d expect from the glossy pages of the past,” is how we described the series our review of Season 1.

Netflix’s Cable Girls returns for Season 2 this Christmas
15th November 2017
Netflix is wishing subscribers an extra special Feliz Navidad this Christmas, as its first Spanish original series returns for a second season.
Cable Girls (Las Chicas del Cable) first premiered in April, taking us back to Madrid, 1928, when the national telephone company opened its headquarters in the city centre, drawing hundreds of girls to apply for a job as a “cable girl” in the only place that represented progress and modernity for women at the time.
The show follows Lidia (Blanca Suárez, El barco, El internado), Marga (Nadia de Santiago, Musarañas, Amar es para siempre), Carlota (Ana Fernández, Los protegidos) and Ángeles (Maggie Civantos, Vis a vis), as they try to find their way through sexism, betrayal and competition to make friends and a new future for themselves. The result was so promising that Netflix renewed it for a second season before the first had ever premiered.
“A light, frothy series that wears its broad feminist message with all the style you’d expect from the glossy pages of the past,” is how we described the series our review of Season 1. “The initial plotting may feel very familiar, but the corridors of the gorgeous set and the costumes all glow with the optimism of the future, and the easily-consumed narrative swiftly connects you with a cliffhanger that will pull you forwards into the next chapter.”
The light tone, though, built to a dark climax, which Season 2 picks up from – six months later, new management shakes things up, Lidia faces romantic backlash, Sara suffers an identity crisis, and the friends deal with committing a dangerous deed.

Trailer: Netflix’s Cable Girls put their dreams on the line
8th April 2017
This April, Netflix premieres its first Spanish original series, Cable Girls (Las Chicas del Cable).
The show takes us back to Madrid, 1928, when the national telephone company opens its headquarters in the city centre and hundreds of girls queue up to get a job as a “cable girl” in the only place that represents progress and modernity for women at the time. Four girls, coming from very different backgrounds, will start work as operators. From that day on, jealousy, envy and betrayal will get mixed up with the hunger for success, friendship and love.
The group of four is formed by Lidia (Blanca Suárez, El barco, El internado), Marga (Nadia de Santiago, Musarañas, Amar es para siempre), Carlota (Ana Fernández, Los protegidos) and Ángeles (Maggie Civantos, Vis a vis).
The show has already been renewed by Netflix for a second season – and judging by our first trailer for the series, it’s not hard to see why, as the Cable Girls don’t shy away from picking up the phone and calling in their rights to dreams, freedom and being sassy as hell. Season 1 is released on Netflix on Friday 28th April.
Cable Girls: Netflix’s first Spanish series already renewed for second season
3rd March 2017
This spring, Netflix heads to Spain for Las Chicas del Cable, its first original series produced on Spanish soil.
The show, which is set in 1920s Madrid, when the national telephone company opens its headquarters in the city centre and hundreds of girls queue up to get a job as a cable girl in the only place that represents progress and modernity for women at the time.
Four girls, coming from very different backgrounds, will start work as operators. From that day on, jealousy, envy and betrayal will get mixed up with the hunger for success, friendship and love.
The group of four consists of Lidia (Blanca Suárez, El barco, El internado), Marga (Nadia de Santiago, Musarañas, Amar es para siempre), Carlota (Ana Fernández, Los protegidos) and Ángeles (Maggie Civantos, Vis a vis).
We’ll get to meet the quartet of cable girls this spring, when the series premieres on Netflix worldwide. It’s part of more than 90 original productions in development by the streaming giant across the continent, as it doubles down on investment in European content, including Italy’s Suburra, Germany’s Dark, France’s The Spy and a host of British co-productions. Since 2012, it has spent $1.75 billion on original content, covering licensed, original and co-productions.
“Of the European shows available on Netflix last year, more than half of watchers came from outside of Europe, which is why we are confident our upcoming slate of international shows will be enjoyed by viewers in their home countries and beyond,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, at an event in Berlin this week.
Indeed, Netflix is so confident in its first Spanish original series that it has already dialled a second season of Las Chicas del Cable. Season 1 will premiere on Friday 28th April.
