Netflix and Keanu Reeves are teaming up for an adaptation of the John Wick star’s comic book, Brzrkr.
The streamer has acquired the rights to the BOOM! Studios comic book, which was first published on 3rd March. The inaugural issue has already sold over 615,000, making it the highest-selling launch in almost thirty years.
Created by Reeves, written by Reeves and New York Times bestselling writer Matt Kindt, and illustrated by famed Marvel artist Ron Garney with colors by Bill Crabtree, letters by Clem Robins, and character designs and covers by Rafael Grampá, the comic book came from an original idea Reeves had been developing for a number of years.
Brzrkr is a brutal saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000-year fight through the ages. The man known only as “B” is half-mortal and half-god, cursed and compelled to violence, even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the earth for centuries, B may have finally found a refuge – working for the US government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence… and how to end it.
Netflix will first adapt the story into a feature film followed by an anime spinoff series. Reeves, who recently completed production on Matrix 4 and begins production on John Wick 4 this Spring, will star in the live-action film adaptation. The anime series will further expand the Brzrkr universe by exploring different elements of the story. In the series, Reeves will reprise his role and voice his character.
Keanu Reeves will produce, along with Ross Richie and Stephen Christy for BOOM! Studios, Stephen Hamel for Company Films. Adam Yoelin for BOOM! Studios will exec-produce.
The announcement of the projects follows Netflix inking a first-look deal with BOOM! Studios for live-action and animated TV series.
