Black Mirror is the most popular TV series on Netflix UK, according to data from the streaming giant.

The technology dystopia, created by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, returned for a fifth season last week, and wasted no time in bringing in viewers. The show was the most watched title on Netflix, ahead of only When They See Us, which rose in the weekly rankings as word of mouth spread following its release.

Good Girls, which recently returned for a second season, was the third most watched TV series, ahead of last week’s top ranking What/If, while Designated Survivor, which recently returned for Season 3, was the sixth most popular show, ahead of Dead to Me and Gavin & Stacey, which recently announced a new Christmas special. The top 10 series was closed out by Happy!, which debuted a second season just as the show was cancelled.

Spider-Man: Homecoming was the most popular film, ahead of new sci-fi release I Am Mother and recently added Despicable Me 3. My Guest My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, which just dropped its second season, was the most popular reality series, while new food series The Chef Show was the second most-watched documentary, behind Our Planet.

Netflix’s data is being released weekly for the UK only, as a new experiment to see if users find the regular round-up a useful indication of what’s trending. The figures, of course, should be taken with a pinch of salt: Netflix’s count for a “viewer” is anyone who completes at least 70 per cent of one episode of a TV series or 70 per cent of a film – an indication, perhaps, of how much time people typically spend watching a single title on Netflix, or of how value attention spans have become in a competitive online age. Nonetheless, they highlight how much of an impact each new release makes, as word of mouth builds among subscribers.
