The 2022 BAFTA winners have been announced and The Power of the Dog and Dune emerged as the big winners, along with After Love and King Richard.

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic went into the night the frontrunner, with 11 nominations to its name, and it swept the board in the technical categories, taking home 5 prizes. Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, which had 8 nominations, rode off with the biggest prizes of the night, including Best Director and Best Film.

The night marked the first time that Netflix has won the Best Film prize at the BAFTAs – a significant milestone for the streamer and a sign of the changing shape and landscape of the industry. Netflix’s The Harder They Fall also took home the Best Debut prize for director Jeymes Samuel.

Apple TV+, however, also emerged as a new contender, with CODA taking home two prizes – Adapted Screenplay for Siân Heder and Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur. Other winners included Will Smith for his Leading Actor performance in King Richard and Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car for Film Not in the English Language, while Questlove’s directorial debut Summer of Soul was crowned best Documentary.

Perhaps the best victory of the night, though, was national treasure Joanna Scanlan, who saw off competition from Lady Gaga in House of Gucci to be named best Leading Actress for her turn in After Love, from debut director Aleem Khan. That After Love, like most of this year’s winners, is already available to watch online in the UK is a sign not just that streaming services are stepping up their commercial ambition and support of filmmakers, but also that acclaimed films are increasingly accessible to audiences across the country. With both The Power of the Dog and CODA demonstrating that while also having theatrical runs, this year’s BAFTA results will hopefully pave the way for a future where cinemas and streamers can both shine a spotlight on deserving talent.
