Gina Rodriguez and Netflix are getting back together this April for rom-com Someone Great, and a new trailer gives us our first look at the result.

Rodriguez, who has recently starred as Carmen Sandiego in the streaming giant’s reboot of the iconic series, plays music journalist Jenny, who has just landed her dream job at an iconic magazine and is about to move to San Francisco. Rather than do long distance, her boyfriend of nine years (Lakeith Stanfield) decides to call it quits. To nurse her broken heart, Jenny gathers up her two best friends Erin (DeWanda Wise) and Blair (Brittany Snow) for one outrageous last adventure in New York City.

From writer/director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (creator of MTV’s Sweet/Vicious), Someone Great is a story of friendship, love, and what it means to let go of your 20s and enter adulthood. The film premieres on Friday 19th April 2019. Here’s the trailer:

Gina Rodriguez to produce and star in Netflix rom-com Someone Great

Netflix and Gina Rodriguez are teaming up for romantic comedy Someone Great.

The film, which is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, marks the feature debut for the helmer, with Robinson also penning the screenplay.

Rodriguez will produce the movie, through her I Can and I Will Productions, alongside Paul Feig and Jessie Henderson of Feigco, plus Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron. Feigco’s Dan Magnante, Likely Story’s Stefanie Azpiazu, and Robinson will exec-produce, with Emily Gipson of I Can and I Will on co-producing duties.

Rodriguez also stars as a woman who seeks adventure in New York, after a tough break-up. Travelling with her two best friends, she then moves across the country for her dream job.

The actress needs no introduction to UK or US audiences, with a Golden GLobe under her belt for her lead role in The CW’s comedy series Jane the Virgin, which is now in its fourth season. She is also no stranger to Netflix, with the streaming giant having acquired the exclusive rights to Jane the Virgin in the UK. She next stars opposite Natalie Portman in Annihilation, Alex Garland’s sci-fi horror, which will be distributed exclusively in the UK by Netflix in March. She is also the voice of Carmen Sandiego in Netflix’s upcoming reboot of the classic adventure series, which will premiere in 2019.

Someone Great will begin production this April.
