Continuing investment in YouView, the fastest growing TV service in the UK, has been agreed by all 7 existing shareholders with funding guaranteed for at least 5 years.
The new agreement retains BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva as equal shareholders committed to promoting the future of connected free-to-air TV and enabling an upgrade path to pay services.
YouView, which pioneered an easy-to-use TV service that seamlessly combines live and catch up television, also announced today that it has passed well over 1 million connected UK homes in less than 18 months since its marketing launch.
Usage and satisfaction with YouView continues to grow with over 3 million video on demand (VOD) plays achieved each week (half a million plays a day). Over half of YouView customers are viewing 4 half hour VOD TV programmes each week.
Richard Halton, CEO, YouView said, “We are delighted that all seven shareholders have committed to the future of YouView with a 5 year term. We have achieved a significant milestone with well over 1 million homes regularly using the service and high levels of usage and satisfaction as key indicators of success for the future. The next phase for YouView involves ambitious developments across a range of devices and we’re looking forward to achieving our long term target of 10 million connected UK homes.”
YouView currently offers over 70 free-to-air TV and radio channels as well as 112 internet delivered TV channels and 9 fully integrated on demand players which include a choice of free and pay TV, radio and film content. A free YouView app for iOS and Android devices is available to customers offering a TV guide and the option to remote record TV progammes. Further content provider additions and app updates are planned for 2014 as well as regular software updates pushed to the set-top box.
