Alfre Woodard is reportedly set to star in Netflix series Luke Cage.
The Oscar-nominated actress, who will be familiar to TV fans as Betty in Desperate Housewives, Ruby in True Blood and President Payton in State of Affairs, is in talks to star in the super hero series, reports Deadline. The show marks the third of four series produced by Marvel for Netflix in an ambitious partnership that has already given us Daredevil and will ultimately lead to the crossover series The Defenders.
If officially cast, Woodward will play a lead character called Minetta, “a powerful woman in local politics who will have an impact on Luke Cage’s life”. Deadline speculates that she could be Black Mariah, a nemesis to Luke Cage as well as Iron Fist.
She will star opposite Mike Colter, who has already been cast as Cage, a man who, thanks to a sabotage experiment, has super strength and escapes prison to become a hero for hire. Before his solo outing – exec produced by showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker – Cage will first appear as a character in the second of Marvel’s Netflix series, Jessica Jones (logo pictured above).
