Star on Disney+ UK: Everything you need to know
David Farnor | On 22, Feb 2021
Tuesday 23rd February sees the launch of Star, a new adult-friendly brand available within Disney+. The special grown-ups section will give all Disney+ subscribers access to more grown-up titles, but also comes with a variety of other changes, from pricing to parental controls. Here’s your one-stop shop to clear up any questions you need answering:
What is Star on Disney+?
Star is a new adult-friendly brand available within Disney+, which will provide a streaming home to TV series and movies from Disney’s creative studios, including Disney Television Studios (20th Television and ABC Signature), FX Productions and 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures. It’s the kind place where you can expect to find those shows and films that were only on Hulu in the USA or the Fox titles that were too grown-up for Disney+’s family-friendly audience.
What’s available on Star?
At launch, more than 75 TV series and more than 280 movies will be available, including Lost, Prison Break, Grey’s Anatomy, Atlanta, The X-Files, How I Met Your Mother, The Favourite, The Grand Budapest Hotel and several Die Hard movies. There will also be four exclusive Star Originals that previously streamed on Hulu in the USA: Big Sky, Solar Opposites, Helstrom and Love, Victor. Click here for a full list of what’s available at launch.
Will more things be added in the future?
Yes, more shows made and launched in the US will come to Star as originals for audiences in the UK and Ireland, including American Horror Stories, Y: The Last Man, The Dropout, Only Murders in the Building, The Old Man and Dopesick. Several new European projects have also been commissioned – find out more here. Films coming in March include Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Danny Boyle’s The Beach, and Gone in 60 Seconds and Taken. Logan, X-Men: First Class, The Golden Girls will be added within the year as well. For updates on what’s coming soon to Disney+ (including Star), see our comprehensive monthly guides here.
How do I get Star on Disney+?
If you have Disney+, Star will automatically be included. Fully integrated into the main menu, it will have its own brand page accessible by an icon next the Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars tiles.
Are parental controls available?
Yes, Disney+ has added in-depth parental controls that include the ability to set limits on access to content for specific profiles based on age ratings. That means you can set each profile to only be able to view things suitable for all ages, 6+, 9+, 12+, 14+, 16+ and 18+. You can then add a PIN to lock any profile with access to mature content, so that younger users cannot access those and view inappropriate titles. You can change your parental controls at disneyplus.com/edit-profiles. For more information, click here.
Does Star mean Disney+ costs more?
Yes, the price of Disney+ increases from 23rd February to £7.99 a month or £79.90 per year. However, any existing customer will not see a change to their pricing until their first renewal after 22nd August 2020 – if you are paying £59.99 a year, this will not increase until your next renewal date.
Can I choose not to have Star?
No, Star is automatically part of all Disney+ accounts.
How many profiles can I have on Disney+?
You can have up to 7 active profiles within one Disney+ account, with up to 4 devices streaming at the same time.
What devices is Disney+ available on?
Disney+ is available on almost every device you can name, including Android and iOS devices, Fire TV devices, Android TV devices, LG WebOS, Samsung Tizen and Vizio Smart TVs, Roku, Sky Q, Apple TV, Sony PS4, Sony PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
