Summer is – whisper it – drawing to a close. But while September sees the start of school, college, university and gradually darkening nights, there’s still some warmth to be found in the comforting skies of Netflix, with a month that’s more packed than most – even by Netflix’s standards. From the return of Narcos and (finally) Gotham to The Expanse’s second season and Line of Duty’s third run, September is a month of long-awaited arrivals. BoJack Horseman is also back for a fourth outing, a reunion almost as sweet as the chance to re-watch Arnie’s Last Action Hero.

New originals come courtesy of Angelina Jolie’s latest directorial effort, Yance Ford’s hugely powerful Sundance hit Strong Island, Robert Redford’s Our Spuls at Night, and the premiere of Jerry Seinfeld’s first Netflix original comedy special. All that and SPECTRE, indie gems Jawbone and The Fits and Designated Survivor’s second season? Thank goodness Netflix has a Magic School Bus to fit everyone on board. That, and a new USS starship called Discovery…

Narcos: Season 3 – 1st September

The rules have changed in Season 3 of Netflix’s drugs thriller, as the DEA turns its attention to a new player on the scene: the Cali Cartel.

Final Fantasy XIV Dad of Light: Season 1 – 1st September

A father and son develop a bond while playing the online role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV in this live-action series based on a true story.

Gotham: Season 3 – 1st September

The Batman prequel series finally premieres in the UK, as DC villains Fish Mooney, the Penguin and Ed Nygma continue to pose a threat to Gotham City. Soon-to-be Commissioner Gordon, meanwhile, is fending off the Indian Hill fugitives, as well as mastermind Hugo Strange, while Alfred and Bruce continue to investigate his parents’ murder.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 – 1st September

Tarantino’s rip-roaring rampage of revenge arrives in full.

Resurface – 1st September

Following the story of a suicidal Iraq war veteran, this short documentary explores how ocean therapy can help vets cope with physical and mental trauma.

Little Evil – 1st September

In this horror-comedy, a recently married man who wants to bond with his stepson begins to fear that the boy is a demon.

Bleed for This – 1st September

Miles Teller stars in this biopic of World Champion Boxer Vinny Pazienza, who, after a near fatal car crash, fights against the doctors’ predictions that he will never walk again.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – 1st September

Hugo Weaving. Guy Pearce. Terence Stamp. In any other movie, that cast list would be enough to catch your eye. In Stephan Elliot’s comedy, though, they help to deliver a thoughtful, funny road movie about two drag queens and a transsexual woman travelling from Sydney to Alice Springs in a tour bus. A classic.

Nocturama – 8th September

After planting bombs in the streets of Paris, a group of disillusioned young people spends a tense night holed up in a high-end department store.

BoJack Horseman: Season 4 – 8th September

While BoJack wrestles with self-loathing and loss, Todd helps Mr. Peanutbutter run for governor of California and Diane gets a job at a hip blog

The Expanse: Season 2 – 8th September

While Earth and Mars teeter on the brink of war, Holden and the crew of the Rocinante begin a hunt to eliminate the constantly evolving protomolecule.

The Confession Tapes: Season 1 – 8th September

This true crime documentary series investigates cases where people convicted of murder claim their confessions were coerced, involuntary or false.

#realityhigh – 8th September

When nerdy high schooler Dani finally attracts the interest of her longtime crush, she lands in the cross hairs of his ex, a social media celebrity.

Fire Chasers: Season 1 – 8th September

During California’s 2016 wildfire season, firefighters risk their lives battling devastating blazes made worse by a years-long drought.

Spirit: Riding Free: Season 2 – 8th September

Lucky and her pals enjoy new friends and fresh challenges in Netflix’s animated spin-off from the equine feature film, from lessons in trick riding and selfless giving to daring snowy rescues.

Greenhouse Academy: Season 1 – 8th September

At this boarding school for young leaders, the students divide up into rival groups. But to conquer the challenges ahead, they’ll have to join forces in this Netflix original programme from Israel.

Jawbone – 8th September

Ian McShane and Ray Winstone deliver knockout performances in this British sports drama about former youth boxing champion Jimmy McCabe, who, after hitting rock bottom, returns to his childhood boxing club and his old team.

SPECTRE – 8th September

A cryptic message from 007’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation.

LEGO Elves: Secrets of Elvendale: Season 1 – 9th September

When the Goblin King kidnaps her sister, Emily Jones and her Elf friends head deep into a magical forest to save her. Based on the popular web series.

The Fits – 13th September

While training at the gym, 11-year-old tomboy Toni becomes entranced with a dance troupe in this fantastic indie film. As she struggles to fit in, she finds herself caught up in danger as the group begins to suffer from fainting spells and other violent fits.

Last Action Hero – 13th September

“To be or not to be?… Not to be.”

American Vandal: Season 1 – 15th September

When 27 cars are vandalized in his high school parking lot, bonehead Dylan Maxwell is the obvious suspect. But this is far from an open-and-shut case in Netflix’s true crime documentary spoof.

First They Killed My Father – 15th September

Angelina Jolie’s unflinching portrayal of the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror and genocide, from the view of a five-year-old survivor cut off from her family in 1975.

Project MC2: Part 5 – 15th September

The girls get to work on a new case when they uncover a scheme to steal a nanotechnology prototype from Space Inc.

Strong Island – 15th September

Yance Ford’s powerful documentary examines the racially charged murder of the filmmaker’s brother, his killer’s acquittal and the family’s response.

VeggieTales in the City: Season 2 – 15th September

Happy Valley: Season 2 – 15th September

Jerry Before Seinfeld – 19th September

After a major deal with Netflix this year, Jerry Seinfeld brings his first comedy special to the streaming service. Blending live stand-up with a personal retrospective, the comedian returns to the New York comedy club that launched his career.

The Good Place: Season 1 and 2 – 21st September

Mike Schur’s US fantasy drama stars Kristen Bell as Eleanor, a woman who is killed by a tractor-trailer carrying a billboard for erectile dysfunction products. She is promptly welcomed into the heavenly afterlife by Michael (Ted Danson). But when she realises that she’s been mistaken for someone else with the same name, she must keep her identity secret to stay in “The Good Place” – all the while trying to become a better person. Season 1 is released as a box set, at the same time as the first episode of Season 2, with new episodes then arriving weekly after their US broadcast.

The Bad Batch – 22nd September

Banished to a wasteland of undesirables, a young woman struggles to find her feet among a drug-soaked desert society and an enclave of cannibals.

Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father: Season 1 – 22nd September

Comic Jack Whitehall invites his stodgy, unadventurous father to travel with him to odd locations and events in an attempt to strengthen their bond.

Fuller House: Season 3 Part 1 – 22nd September

Blue Is the Warmest Color – 25th September

Kiefer Sutherland returns to play the President of the USA in ABC’s entertaining political drama, with episodes arriving weekly within 24 hours of the show’s US broadcast.

Big Mouth – 29th September

A surreal animated comedy series from real-life best friends Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg explores teenage adventures in puberty.

The Magic School Bus Rides Again: Season 1 – 29th September

Ms. Frizzle’s sister – voiced by Kate McKinnon – takes her class on a slew of wild science adventures in this update of the beloved animated show.

Our Souls at Night – 29th September

Seeking a connection, a widow, Addie Moore (Jane Fonda), pays an unexpected visit to her Colorado neighbor, Louis Waters (Robert Redford), a widower.

Club de Cuervos: Season 3 – 29th September

Isabel and Chava face fresh obstacles as they learn to work together as co-presidents of the newest iteration of the Cuervos soccer team.
