Disney’s Netflix rival is here, serving up Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar originals, along with a post-modern revamp of High School Musical and almost every episode of The Simpsons.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and Disney’s newcomer status in the streaming game, a lot of that new content has been delayed, but the start of 2021 sees Disney kick things up a gear as it’s first original Marvel Studios series arrives in the form of WandaVision, ushering in a new era for the MCU. That’s joined by a Marvel docuseries and Season 3 of Runaways, plus the finale of Agents of SHIELD Season 7.

Here’s what’s coming to Disney+ in January 2021:

WandaVision – 15th January

Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, WandaVision marks the first series from Marvel Studios streaming exclusively on Disney+. The series is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision – two super-powered beings living idealised suburban lives – begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems…

Marvel Studios: Legends – 8th January

The series serves as an exciting refresher for the various heroes and villains making their way to the highly anticipated streaming shows premiering on Disney+, setting the stage for the upcoming adventures. The first two episodes will feature Wanda Maximoff and Vision.

Pixar Popcorn – 22nd January

Acollection of mini shorts featuring Pixar characters in all-new, bite-size stories created by Pixar’s talented animators.

Earth to Ned: Part 2 – 1st January

After Ned, Cornelius, and BETI first landed on Disney+ in September, 10 new episodes are beaming down. From the Jim Henson Company comes a late-night talk show hosted by alien commander Ned and his lieutenant Cornelius, who call off the invasion of Earth after they fall in love with human culture. Broadcasting from the bridge of their spaceship, hidden deep underground, Ned and Cornelius interview Earth’s greatest resource, celebrities. With the help of the ship’s artificial intelligence, BETI, and the destructive CLODs, Ned must keep his show a secret from his home planet or suffer the wrath of his father, the Admiral of the Galactic Fleet.

X-Men: Apocalypse – 29th January

Travel back to the 1980s and join Professor Charles Xavier, alongside Raven, Hank and Moira McTaggert who must lead a team of young X-Men to stop an ancient all-powerful mutant and save mankind from complete destruction…

Marvel’s Runaways: Season 3 – 15th January

Every teenager thinks their parents are evil. What if you found out they actually were? Marvel’s Runaways is the story of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against a common foe – their parents.

Eleanor of Avalor: Year 3 – 15th January

The Emmy Award-winning Elena of Avalor is an animated series that follows the story of Elena, a brave and adventurous teenager who saves her kingdom from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule as crown princess until she is old enough to be queen. Set in Avalor, an enchanted fairytale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore, Elena’s journey will lead her to understand that her new role requires thoughtfulness, resilience and compassion, the traits of all truly great leaders.

Star Wars: Force of Destiny Specials: Season 1 to 4 – 8th January

Untold stories from the heroines of the Star Wars universe; featuring Rey, Jyn Erso, Princess Leia, Sabine Wren, Padmé Amidala and Ahsoka Tano. See how their choices, large and small, shape the destiny of the Galaxy.

Puppy Dog Pals: Year 3 – 22nd January

Fun-loving pug puppies, brothers Bingo and Rolly, have thrill-seeking appetites that take them on exhilarating adventures in their neighbourhood and around the globe. Whether helping their owner Bob, assisting a friend in need or exploring with their pal Keia, the pugs’ motto is that life is more exciting with your best friend by your side. Each episode features two 11-minute stories that showcase Bingo and Rolly’s similarities and differences while demonstrating positive lessons about friendship, problem- solving, collaboration, creativity and adventure.

Big Sharks Rule – 1st January

It’s an ocean of giants. South Africa has a dramatic, rocky coast that’s raked by churning currents. Warm, cold, rich and murky water collide to create shark central, with enough food to sustain the biggest. The cast is a who’s who of the most notorious: Great White, Tiger, Bull, Ragged tooth, and the biggest of the lot – the Whale shark. It’s a rare chance to celebrate and study these iconic sharks. This is a high-speed journey into the realm of Big Sharks. Who are they? How do they survive? Why are they here, and how did they get so big?

700 Sharks – 1st January

In Polynesia, the largest school of sharks will be studied at an unprecedented scale. An international team of scientists will dive among the pack of 700 squalls. 3 years of preparation were needed to approach the sharks at night, when they are most aggressive. Using revolutionary technology and underwater filming equipment, we will reveal hunting strategies and social behaviours that will change our understanding of the world’s greatest predator.

Thailand’s Wild Side – 15th January

Across Thailand’s myriad landscapes, animals face a constant challenge – to find food. From misty rainforests to rich wetlands, salty mangrove forests to busy cities, they’re locked in a deadly battle either to search out their prey or avoid becoming someone else’s dinner. Their survival depends on their wits, guile and ingenuity, and losers pay the ultimate price. It’s all to play for.

Great Shark Chow Down – 1st January

The world’s leading scientists and cinematographers relive 5 extraordinary shark feeding events. From being surrounded at night by 700 grey reek sharks, a 300-strong gathering of blacktip, dusky and bronze sharks feeding on thousands of bait fish, to the spectacular sight of more than 200 blue sharks feeding on the carcass of a seven ton whale; the Great Shark Chow Down is an epic celebration of sharks from around the world. It ends with a cautionary reminder that these spectacular feasts may soon be a thing of the past as shark numbers crash worldwide.

Expedition Amelia – 8th January

National Geographic’s Bob Ballard discovered the Titanic. Now he’s setting off for a remote Pacific island to solve another enduring mystery-the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. The pioneering aviatrix shattered records in the air and broke barriers for women on the ground, becoming one of the most famous women in history. Then in 1937 she vanished. Can Ballard find her plane?

Wild Uganda – 22nd January

Uganda is still what travellers consider an ‘insider tip’. Off the tourist map, a place still in the shadows of its past. Visitors, including scientists and conservationists, had a difficult time in the civil war-stricken country. Poaching had endangered many of Uganda’s most iconic animals including Mountain gorillas, cave elephants, the chimpanzees and even the tree- dwelling lions. But now the national parks have been restored and Uganda’s wildlife is once again
thriving. This is a celebration of their survival.
