“I thought I fired you.” “Not that I know of…” That’s the sound of Ryan O’Connell’s Special returning for a second season.
Based on his part-memoir, part-manifesto, I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves, the series follows Ryan, a gay man with mild cerebral palsy who decides to rewrite his identity and finally go after the life he wants. After years of dead-end internships, working in his pyjamas as a blogger and communicating mostly via text, Ryan eventually figures out how to take his life from bleak to chic and began limping towards adulthood.
The offbeat comedy is written and executive produced by O’Connell, who also stars in the show. Jim Parsons serves as an exec-producer alongside him.
Season 2 catches up with Ryan as he has a gnarly case of writer’s block. Enter Tanner, a fun, flirty dance instructor who charms Ryan despite not being totally available. When Ryan’s writer’s block eventually lifts, he’s inspired to write a long-form piece about disability. From there, he begins a journey of self-discovery that creates unexpected complications in his relationship with Tanner. Meanwhile, Kim lets her guard down when she meets Harrison, a sensitive tech mogul with a humble background – but her insecurities and jealous tendencies continue to hamper her personal life and threaten to push Harrison away.
As for Karen, will she be able to lean into her new-found independence and create a life that centres around her own desires for once?
