Amazon cancels Patriot after two seasons

Amazon has cancelled Patriot after two seasons.
Created by Steven Conrad (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Amazon’s spy thriller stars Michael Dorman (Wonderland) as intelligence officer John Tavner, who is assigned to stop Iran going nuclear. The way for him to do it? Assume the cover of a mid-level employee at a Midwestern industrial piping firm. However, a bout with PTSD, the Federal government’s incompetence and the intricacies of keeping a day job in the “front” industrial piping company cause a barrage of ever-escalating fiascos that jeopardise Tavner’s mission.
The show took its time to premiere its second season, which our review praised for “brimming with dark humour, grisly violence and off-kilter dialogue”. But nine months after the sophomore run debuted, Amazon has no plans to continue with a belated third season renewal.
Deadline reports that Albert Cheng, Amazon Studios’ co-head of TV, confirmed at the TCA press tour that the comedy-drama would not return.
“At this time we don’t have a plan for a new season,” he said. “We are not planning a new season.”
Trailer: Patriot Season 2 set for November release date

Will John Tavner be able to leave John Lakeman behind and save himself? That’s the lingering question that drives Amazon’s Patriot, which returns for Season 2 this November.

“Fantastically silly and edge-of-your-seat gripping” is how we described the show in our review of Season 1.
It was renewed for a second season last year, and will find John working to salvage a deteriorating covert mission in order to rescue his brother, Edward (Michael Chernus, Orange is the New Black). Meanwhile, his father presents a perilous way out of it all: find and assassinate pro-nuclear Iranian presidential candidate Cantar Walley in Paris.
By now, though, too many people know too much — John’s team of allies has grown but so has his field of adversaries and his efforts to navigate these forces come with a heavy cost. After a long time waiting, Season 2 finally has a release date – and a trailer to give us a taste of what’s in store, and that promises to include drugs, guns and lots of accidental severing of fingers.
Season 2 premieres on Friday 9th November on Amazon Prime Video. Here’s the trailer:

Their father, Tom (Terry O’Quinn, Lost), meanwhile, orders a failsafe: to assassinate the pro-nuclear Iranian presidential candidate in a heavily-guarded Paris compound. Amazon renews Patriot for Season 2
18th April 2017
Amazon has ordered a second season of Patriot.
The original series, which stars Michael Dorman (Wonderland), Emmy winner Terry O’Quinn (Lost), Kurtwood Smith (That 70’s Show) and Michael Chernus (Orange is the New Black), follows the complicated life of intelligence officer John Tavner, who is assigned to stop Iran going nuclear.
Patriot explores the lesser known, unglamorous aspects of life as an intelligence officer. While the future of the world is at stake, it’s often the idiosyncrasies of those around John Tavner that force him to have to choose between bad alternatives.
“Perhaps fittingly in these political times, this latest addition to the espionage thriller genre takes a full-on absurdist approach,” we wrote in our review of Season 1. “The result… is a triumph. We have a standard spy thriller plot – Iran must be stopped from developing nuclear weapons – but a protagonist John Tavner (Michael Dorman) who’s a bizarre mix of child-like innocent, deadly assassin, unfeeling psychopath and guitar-strumming folk singer. Think Homeland somehow merged with the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis: action, intrigue, moody songs in folk clubs, surreal moments involving kayaks and mechanised bulls… With its gripping storyline, gallows humour and strangely likeable ensemble of characters, this is definitely a show to watch.”
That ensemble includes Tom Tavner (O’Quinn), John’s State Department Director of Intelligence father; John’s older brother Edward Tavner (Chernus), a young Texas congressman; John’s wife Alice, played by Kathleen Munroe (Call Me Fitz); Agathe, played by Aliette Opheim (Sandor slash Ida), a brilliant young homicide detective from Luxembourg hot on John’s trail; and Mr. Claret (Smith), John’s stickler of a new boss at the piping firm where John is employed.
The second season of Patriot will be executive produced by show creator Steven Conrad (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), who also writes and directs on the series, James Parriott (Grey’s Anatomy), Glenn Ficarra (Crazy Stupid Love, This Is Us), John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love, This Is Us), Charles Gogolak (This is Us), and Gil Bellows (Temple Grandin).
Season 1 is still available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
