Gina Carano has been fired from The Mandalorian and removed from the Star Wars universe for any future projects.
The former MMA star who turned her hand to movies in Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 thriller Haywire has since gone on to build an acting career, with roles in Deadpool, Fast & Furious 6 and, most recently, The Mandalorian. Carano played former Rebel Alliance soldier Cara Dune in the Star Wars series, proving a favourite among fans.
This week, though, she has sparked controversy with a series of social media posts that implied being a Republican is like being Jewish the Holocaust. The hashtag #FireGinaCarano trended following the Instagram posts, with screenshots of the now-deleted posts accompanied by users calling for her to be removed from the Disney+ show.
Carano’s departure from the Star Wars world comes just as Lucasfilm opens up the world surrounding its popular series, with several spin-offs in the works, including Rangers of the New Republic that could have featured Cara Dune. Now, however, Lucasfilm has confirmed in a statement that she will not be connected with the space saga going forward.
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a spokesperson said. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
Carano’s agency, UTA, has also dropped the actor.
