Another new year over, a new one just begun – but before you start looking forwards to what 2020 has in store, spare a minute to look back at what’s departing Sky and NOW this New Year, as rights expire for a whole host of titles, from Futurama and Watchmen to DC animation and a number of Disney movies.

The Wire: Season 1 – 5th January

One of the best TV shows of all time, David Simon’s drama stars Dominic West (The Affair) as Detective Jimmy McNulty, who along with his fellow investigators attempts to infiltrate a West Baltimore drug ring headed by the elusive Avon Barksdale (Wood Harris) and his lieutenant, Stringer Bell (Idris Elba).

Futurama: Season 1 to 10 – 10th January

Matt Groening’s follow-up to The Simpsons, which follows the Planet Express delivery team in the year 3000, is an adventurous, amusing, imaginative treat.

Legion: Season 1 to 3 – 12th January

Noah Hawley’s X-Men series is a mind-bending piece of TV, following David Haller (Dan Stevens), a haunted man with power beyond comprehension. His power does not come free, but at the steep cost of David’s mind. Plagued by numerous split personalities – each commanding a different aspect of his power – David is trying to find his way back to sanity. He’s about to give up… until he met the girl of his dreams (Rachel Keller).

Watchmen: Season 1 – 15th January

Damon Lindelof’s remix of Watchmen is compulsively unusual, excitingly ambitious and challengingly timely television.

Billions: Season 1 – 16th January

Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti. That’s all you need to know about Showtime’s superb thriller, which is set in the ego-driven world of New York high finance. Lewis plays billionaire hedge fund kingpin Bobby Axe Axelrod, alongside Giamatti who plays Chuck Rhoades, the tenacious U.S attorney who tries to take him down. The gripping drama sparks to life as the two actors go head-to-head, setting up a thrilling game of cat and mouse.

Don’t Look Now – 31st December

Nicolas Roeg’s remarkable horror, based on the story by Daphne du Maurier, follows a couple (Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland) trying to come to terms with the death of their daughter, as Sutherland’s husband is hired to restore a church in Italy. Full of grief and spooky atmosphere, you’ll never see Venice in the same way again.

The Conversation – 31st December

Surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) values his personal privacy and anonymity above all else. When he and partner Stan (John Cazale) are hired by a mysterious client known only as ‘the director’ (Robert Duvall) to follow a young couple, Harry deduces that the woman, Mary, is the director’s wife, and the man an employee with whom she is conducting an affair. Harry becomes convinced that the director intends to murder the pair and, haunted by guilt from a previous assignment where the information he provided resulted in loss of human life, sets out to prevent the killing himself. The result is gripping piece of 1970s paranoia with an intense, low-key turn from a never-better Gene Hackman.

Zoolander – 31st December

You can re-watch Ben Stiller’s crazy comedy about a male model brainwashed to assassinate the Malasyian Prime Minister any time and find more treats hidden in the pile. Proving Stiller’s talents as a capable helmer for goofy as well as sinister material, Zoolander seems like a silly character film from the outset, but with a script so insanely sharp, yet willing to go off on tangents for bigger laughs, the end result has become a cult classic.

DC Animation – 31st December

It’s not the most super end to the year, with a host of DC animated films departing, including Batman: Bad Blood, Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem and several Justice League outings.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army – 7th January

Hellboy II cements Del Toro’s position as a phenomenal force of cinema and imagination: uncompromising, uncanny and unbelievable.

Brave – 16th January

Pixar’s animated gem may look like a story about an archer versus a bear but emerges as a sweet and simple tale of one daughter and her relationship with her mother.

Phantom Thread – 17th January

Paul Thomas Anderson’s romantic antidote to tortured male artists is a swooning, darkly comic masterpiece.

Isle of Dogs – 22nd January

Wes Anderson’s gorgeously crafted stop-motion comedy finds fresh bite amid familiar laughs.
