What’s leaving Netflix UK in September / October 2018?
David Farnor | On 16, Sep 2018
As autumn arrives, the nights begin to darker sooner, but all that means is more time to hunker down on the sofa and get on with the business of bingeing. The only bad news? Some of the best things on Netflix won’t be there forever, and this September is a particularly sad one, as it marks the departure one of the best horror movies of recent years, Marvel’s most entertaining film, a cracking Tom Hiddleston drama and an Oscar-winning comedy. And, if you’re wondering what might happen to The Expanse, now that it’s been snapped up by Amazon as a Prime Video original, the end of the month has your answer…
This month is your last chance to stream the following:
The Witch – 17th September
Never trust a goat. That could be the moral of the story in The Witch, which sees a Christian family head into the forest to live a more devout life in 17th century New England. Director Robert Eggers mounts an atmosphere of pure horror through chilling visuals, a haunting score and a palpable sense of unease. Across 90 slow yet beautiful, minutes, The Witch slips under your skin and leaves you squirming in discomfort. A genuinely creepy horror.
Django Unchained – 19th September
Quentin Tarantino’s violent Western is a lot of things, but one thing it isn’t is boring. Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz pair up as a freed slave and German dentist to exact revenge upon white folk (including Leonardo DiCaprio’s Calvin Candie) – but it’s away from the blood splattering that Django Unchained finds its unexpected depth, with Samuel L. Jackson stealing the show as Candie’s conflicted butler.
Guardians of the Galaxy – 19th September
Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka… One of Marvel’s most entertaining flicks bids a sad farewell.
I Saw the Light – 21st September
Tom Hiddleston is on stellar form in this biopic of folk-singing legend Hank Williams.
The Big Short – 23rd September
The Big Short is a patronising, awkward and uneven Oscar-winning comedy about the financial crisis. And, against all the odds, that’s a very, very good thing.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. – 24th September
Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer (and a scene-stealing Alicia Vikander) are on super-stylish form in Guy Ritchie’s period spy thriller, based on the classic TV series. Between the slick suits, snappy editing and super-cool soundtrack, this is a cool pastiche that isn’t ashamed to simply have fun. Sometimes, it’s not just about how well you do something: it’s about how good you look while doing it.
Captain America: Civil War – 29th September
Marvel assembles more than just The Avengers with this Captain America sequel that brings together a wealth of plots with a surprising burst of humour, wit, action and emotion.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier – 29th September
Marvel embraces 70s paranoia with this political thriller that brings heft and weight to its superhero series.
Jaws – 30th September
Dummm dum. Dummm dum….
The Expanse – 30th September
SyFy’s series, which is based on the bestselling books by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, unfolds across a colonised solar system 200 years in the future, when two strangers become unwittingly swept up in a vast conspiracy. One of the best sci-fi series of the last decade, it’s little wonder that when SyFy cancelled the show this year, Amazon swooped to resurrect it as an Amazon Original. Ahead of its return, the series begins its migration to its new home.
Rick and Morty: Season 1 – 6th October
Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon’s irreverent, dark, twisted, dark, hilarious, dark, disturbing, dark animated comedy follows the misadventures of an alcoholic scientist and his grandson – think Back to the Future, but with more time-travelling, universe-hopping portals, aliens and rude jokes. The first season departs on Saturday, but the good news is you can still see Season 2 and 3 until 1st November – and you can buy Season 1 as a box set on Amazon Video.
The BFG – 7th October
Mark Rylance lends his dulcet tones to Steven Spielberg’s utterly charming adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic kids’ book.
Blair Witch (2016) – 8th October
After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his missing sister, a young man and his friends venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mystery of her disappearance. Is it connected to the legend of the Blair Witch? Given the title of Adam “You’re Next” Wingard’s latest entry in the franchise, we’ll leave you to work out that bit.
The Neon Demon – 14th October
Beguiling and intoxicating, Nicolas Winding Refn’s dark, disturbing satire of the modelling world is a masterpiece of mood. Read our full review.
