What’s leaving Netflix UK in October / November 2016?
David Farnor | On 17, Oct 2016
With Black Mirror arriving on Netflix this month, it’s only a matter of time until Charlie Brooker’s unsettling insight into the perils of modern technology has you staying away from the streaming site altogether. But if you do, you’ll miss the chance to catch one of the finest Scandi series of recent years, as well as the Sherlock Holmes movie that helped to inspire Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s BBC series.
This is your last chance to stream the following on Netflix UK:
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes – 21st October
Billy Wilder’s 1970 take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective manages to be both period and modern, following Holmes’ investigation into a woman’s missing husband after an attempt on her life. The production values are impressive, the script amusing, the tone surprisingly melancholy, and Robert Stephens’ Sherlock and Colin Blakely’s Watson are accompanied by none other than Christopher Lee as Mycroft Holmes.
Teen Wolf – 21st October
Now that MTV has turned the 1985 film into a TV series, don’t miss your chance to go back and revisit the amiable original Teen Wolf. Michael J. Fox stars as all-too-average teenage high-schooler Scott, who suddenly finds himself turning into a wolf. What follows is less a horror than a sheepish teen movie in wolves’ clothing, but Fox is on charming form, even though he outshone himself in the far superior Back to the Future in the same year.
The Bridge – 2nd November
One of the series that put Scandinavian noir on the map, The Bridge is a Swedish/Danish thriller that sees two detectives – Saga Norén (Sofia Helin) and Martin Rohde (Kim Bodnia) – from either side of the Øresund Bridge team up to investigate a body found between the two countries. Gripping stuff. Netflix only has the first of the show’s three seasons, but that only makes it easier to try before it disappears.
