What’s leaving Netflix UK in March and April 2016?
David Farnor | On 20, Mar 2016
Another month gets sucked into the existential abyss and with it go another string of streaming titles into the digital void – but this month is a little different, as several BBC shows are set to disappear from Netflix UK. Earlier this month, a whole heap of them were scheduled for removal, but the broadcaster and the VOD giant have since renewed their licence for the majority of them – although the official word is still out on Doctor Who, which may be leaving in May…
In the meantime, here’s what’s leaving Netflix UK in the near future:
Berberian Sound Studio – 21st March
“I’ve never worked on a horror movie before,” mumbles Toby Jones’ timid sound engineer, who goes to Italy to produce effects for a 1970s horror film. In between the chopping of cabbages and squishing of carrots, the tiny Brit loses himself completely. This is a brilliant demonstration of how sound can warp our fragile little minds, and the best on-screen use of a vegetable since 2002’s Mrs Caldicot’s Cabbage War. Foley crap, it’s awesome.
Call Me Kuchu – 22nd March
This 2012 documentary about gay activists in Uganda fighting to defeat new legislation in the country that would make homosexuality punishable by death is powerful, important viewing.
Rango – 22nd March
Surreal, serious and surprisingly subvertise, some of Rango’s subtleties may go over younger viewers’ heads, but Gore Verbinski’s gorgeous animation and Hans Zimmer’s hilariously silly score makes for a bizarre, post-modern Western that is packed full of ideas and laughs.
Gattaca – 25th March
Andrew Niccol has long been one of the most interesting filmmakers working in science fiction and Gattaca is a perfect example. The film, set in the near future, stars the always-excellent Ethan Hawke as Vincent, a man who is genetically flawed, something that prevents him from being sent into space. His solution? Buying the genes of a genetically perfect man (Jude Law) to join the Gattaca program.
Short Poppies – 2nd April
Everyone knows Murray from Flight of the Conchords, but did you know Rhys Darby has his own TV show? A mockumentary about a journalist profiling the residents of a fictional small town, all played by Darby, Short Poppies is a showcase for his natural, versatile acting – but one that’s shot through with good-natured charm and likeable humour. A reminder that comedy can be nice – and still utterly hilarious.
Grimm: Season 3 – 31st March
After Season 1 and 2 left at the start of the month, Season 3 of Grimm is set to depart from Netflix UK too – so put Daredevil on hold, if you’re a fan of the Detective Nick Burkhardt.
Arne Dahl – 31st March
Everyone knows Murray from Flight of the Conchords, but did you know Rhys Darby has his own TV show? A mockumentary about a journalist profiling the residents of a fictional small town, all played by Darby, Short Poppies is a showcase for his natural, versatile acting – but one that’s shot through with good-natured charm and likeable humour. A reminder that comedy can be nice – and still utterly hilarious.
Zen – 30th March
This BBC detective series was sadly cancelled, but Rufus Sewell is superb as the only honest cop in Rome, Detective Aurelio Zen – and, thanks to the decision to avoid potentially dodgy Italian accents altogether, faces no obstacles in his quest to charm viewers’ socks off. One of several BBC shows set to depart this month – read on below for the full list, including David Attenborough and Fry’s Planet Word.
They Came Together – 30th March
A man and a woman fall in love in exactly the way they would in a rom-com in David Wain’s spoof. Packed with more knowing jokes than you could shake a self-aware stick at, it’s hilariously witty but – thanks to Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd’s charming performances – unexpectedly sweet too. Equal parts smart and silly, if you giggled at the title, They Came Together is for you.
A Separation – 31st March
Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, this powerful drama follows a middle-class couple (Nader and Simin), who decide to divorce. But that simple idea, summed up in the deceptively short title, has ramifications that spread throughout society.
24: Seasons 5 to 8 – 4th April
If you still haven’t seen the final four seasons of Jack Bauer’s signature blend of shooting, torturing and shouting at Chloe, snap them up while you can.
We Are the Best! – 9th April
We have never been in a punk band. Neither have Bobo or Klara. But that doesn’t stop them. Heading to their local Stockholm rec centre, the young teenagers grab a bass guitar and a drum set and immediately start rebelling. “Hate the sport!” they yell over and over, banging the instruments loudly in protest against PE classes. The fact that they can’t play their instruments simply doesn’t matter. They sound dreadful, adorable – and 100% real. You may never have been in a punk band. After watching We are the Best!, you’ll want to start one immediately.
